Would Apple ever make a 30" iMac?

I mean with a matte screen, wouldn't it just be the ideal photoshop machine.

When Nehealm rolls around, and we get quad core notebook chips, and will take upto 8gb RAM hopefully.

Intel Core 2 Quad 2.5ghz
4gb RAM
500gb HDD
ATI 4*** or Nvidia 9*** whatever.
30" glossy as standard, with a matte option.

Say $3599? Seems expensive yes but factor in a 30" screen and you got a great deal ;)
 
It would be better if it had connections to hook up a more powerful computer when the iMac components are obsolete. Usually monitors have a longer useful life than the computer it supports.
 
i kinda doubt it cause the price would overlap some of the MacPros...and they are twice the machine compared to iMacs

ah! a very good point.


afterall, lets get back to what the iMac really is.

When first introduced it was mac's superior 'consumer' machine. Designed for the increased want and need for internet connectivity, the iMac is not intended for these behemoth specs.

I think the 24'' is grand and very, very impressive. As long as the MacPro's keep upgrading, however, I see no fault in our want for more out of the iMac line as long as, as previously stated, they keep all options UNDER the MacPro.. to do otherwise is to void the model's intention.

If you want 30'' screens and power to do poweruser things - Apple has your machine - the MacPro not the iMac.
 
Doubtful. Maybe a 27" in the distant future when displays are cheaper.
 
I know a lot of people would like it, but it wouldn't be for me, to me the 24" is huge. You never know though. I'm sure some day.
 
I used to think my 24 in monitor was too big. Now I have a 30 in monitor in front of me and 24 in monitor's on each side of it. Makes me feel important :)

Actually, for the work I do, having all 3 monitors going is a huge benefit.

A 30 in iMac would be sweet indeed.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't want it unless you could use it as just a monitor.

I have a 24" and it's almost too big. (When I got it out of the box, I said it was too big, so I've definitely backed off of that claim...;))

You don't have to have your desk at a window for reflections to cause problems.

I think you will find the number of people who wouldn't consider a glossy screen somewhat greater than your suggestions.
I certainly agree that any serious (not just professional) Photoshop users would be included but also anyone involved in graphics / design where the final output needs to be the same as the image seen on the screen.

As for people who randomly dislike glossy screens for no apparent reason, I certainly don't know any. I do however know quite a few users who do dislike glossy screens but have very good reasons for their dislike.

Have you considered why there is a lack of 30" glossy screens available?
Could it possibly be a lack of demand? .. :)
 
I know how old this is, and I don't care. I would contemplate (@*#ing, @*#$ing and maybe even (@$&#*$(#%&#$ing for one of these...

I'd also pay up to 3300 bones for one, if that were an option.

You know...I'd never even thought of this up until now.

Although I've never seen one in persion, I understand that Xserve is about the right dimensions to be able to throw a 30" on the front, and you've got something resembling the product imagined above.

EDIT: Although I expect the price would be more in the range of $3499-$3999
 
I can't imagine it would sell well at $3500 or more. Hell, even at $3000 it would be a stretch. At those prices, we're talking about professional buyers, and IMO, most professionals are not going to want an all in one.

When the prices on 30" displays come down such that the machine could sell for more like $2500, then I think we'll see it.

XServes don't exactly set the world on fire in terms of video performance either, oh and you would have some nasty thermal issues to deal with

Hehe, I wasn't actually suggesting they sell the current Xserve with a built in 30"...I was more just remarking it as a proof of concept.

And while a thicker, side vented or top/bottom vented, all aluminum 30" iMac isn't a new idea at all, it's still neat to think about. I enjoyed looking at the artists rendering above.
 
I think computer screens will continue to larger over time, even though 30" seems gigantic as of right now. Personally, however, I would rather buy an external 30" monitor, as with the current design of the iMac, when the computer becomes outdated, the monitor goes with it, which is kind of a waste of a monitor which would still work perfectly well hooked up as a second monitor to another machine.
 
Well, I've got a 24" imac with a second 24" display next to it - and dare I say this - I could use more.

I'd dig a 30", and if it had a video input, it opens other options up, not to mention, it'll allow you to use the imac as a monitor once it's out of date.

What I would really like, is a higher resolution 30", say double what it's capable of right now. I've got a 1680 x 1050 15" LCD on my old laptop, and have used a 1920 x 1200 15" LCD too, and those are SWEET. I'd love to have that pixel density in a 24" or 30".

Ahh, to dream.

To me, this really isn't a problem. Re-sale values on macs are ridiculous! As long as you sell it after 3-5 years and don't keep it past 6... you can usually get a pretty decent price out of your iMac.
 
I wonder about the "longevity" of a 30" imac as well. I'm already worried about what to do with the 24" in 2-3 years when the hardware is obsolete...Maybe someone will open the case and find a way to wire the internal monitor connector to a DVI/HDMI port...
