Would enabling Messages in iCloud (on newer iOS e.g. 12.x) allow 2 iPhones (one i5 and one i6) with previously separate SMS, iMessages, Attachments to Sync up & have a unified copy/ history?

  • Or it would only do this SYNC for messages that come in from this point on?
  • Would previous History be SYNCED?
    • Used i5 in 2017 - Battery & LCD Crashed
    • Used i6 in all 2108 & Now -
      • Would like Messages / iMessages/ Attachments synched up/ MERGED if possible via iOS 12 iCloud for Messages
This is the intent.

Lots of articles here but its unclear if it also uploads all historical messages/ interactions to iCloud to do a Full Sync.

yes*. it will sync Messages on both iPhones if they share the same apple ID/iCloud name.

*there are reports however by users indicating that it doesn't completely sync, as well attachments not syncing over.

it has worked for me, without problems.

New messages would be synced, but I didn't think that message history would be synced with this method.

I am pretty sure that if you restore your new device from the backup of an old device, the message history will transfer. I have done this many times.

I have message history in 2 phones. Transfer of one to another will over-write. This would have ideally been done when I transitioned from i5 to i6. Now I have 2 message histories which I would like Merged/ Combined.

both message databases will be combined.
This is the issue I'd like confirmation on (as I am seeing mixed reports). Have you tested/ experienced?

* What kind of reports? Causations (Bad net? Space issues? certain iOS/ Device issues?)
* In your experience with EVERYTHING (SMS, iMessages, Attachments) sync?
- Including Historically separate conversations previously on DIFFERENT DEVICES from SEVERAL YEARS (I have convos since iPhone 1/ 3 / 4)?
* What Device + iOS version did you do this one to COMBINE/ MERGE the Messages?

My mom had dozens of very old text messages (call notifications, security codes) from her iPhone on her iPad after we enabled the feature for her. Not sure if it was instant or took a while though.

It doesn‘t hurt to try I guess? Get backups of both phones just in case though.
