iPod Would Like To Buy An iPod Classic - Now or Never?

I am looking to buy an iPod Classic - I've heard rumors that it may be discontinued. Which makes me think 'if I want one I should buy one soon'. However, if the classic is not going to be discontinued I would like to wait to buy a new release.

What is everyone's opinion on the extinction of the Classic? It would be a mistake to discontinue, IMO, I don't want anything fancy like iTouch or small like Nano, I want my iPod to hold a large music library!

The iPod touch may be going 128 GBs for September, but it still won't be as cheap as the classic. If you wait and it gets discontinued, there's always the possibility you can still get one new from places like Amazon. It may not get discontinued because flash still hasn't approached price/GB of a 1.8" Hard Drive but don't expect any major update.

By Christmas, the lineup will probably look like this:

iPod Shuffle 2GB | 4GB
iPod Nano 16GB | 32GB
iPod Touch 32GB | 64GB | 128GB

Each of these serve their purpose. The Classic will no longer be needed.

A very likely lineup. Although I wouldn't be surprised if Apple gets rid of the 2 GB model and shuffles prices down (pun not intended) and has the nano as 8 GB and 32 GBs (to force more people up to the high-end model).

For people with large libraries though, it's easily noticeable that come September, a 64 GB iPod touch will still be more expensive than a 160 GB classic.

I agree. I have both a Classic and a Touch (64 GB) and am very fond of both. The classic is the device I take with me everywhere, every day, and it is really designed for people who love music and must have access to their (usually rather large) collections of music. The other plus is the battery, which is good, and the fact that it is pretty sturdy.

Go classic

I myself am going to go the classic route. I prefer to keep my music collection in the wav format and basically need a large portable jukebox. I don't need all the extras as I am planning on getting an iPhone after the conference next week sometime. I'd say what some of the others have said, if it is for music as the main function, go Classic.

Unless the flash gets as large as the classic size, (rumor is what 128 up next?), I don't see them discontinuing the classic. Look what Zune did to ruin their small share of the market. Discontinue their 120 GB storage and their 4gb and 8gb small versions to create only two options, the Zune HD in 16 or 32gb. Great job it did for them. Trying to ride Apple's wave and went to the beach with no waves.
