The used market for cMP's in NZ is terrible, 1. There aren't many 4,1's and 5,1's and 2. They go for insane prices ($1000USD) for the lowest specced models with barely any upgrades, then I saw the prices on US eBay, much cheaper than buying it here. I've seen cMP's and G5's get destroyed when shipping them overseas, specifically the handles and heard that there is a special box meant for this purpose by OWC. Would shipping a cMP US > NZ be OK if I pay the seller to use the OWC box to protect it?

This is just my opinion, but I chatted with OWC about that carton and I think it would protect a Mac Pro sufficiently. The key thing that they were able to confirm for me is that the handle loops and base loops are not in contact with anything, even the dark foam. I assume that this means that they poke through the dark foam, and the computer is suspended in the box with the foam touching only the top plate, bottom plate, and the perimeters of the top and bottom. That design, coupled with the super heavy duty double-strength corrugated cardboard box should be sufficient. But still, I would buy some shipping insurance.

You also need to check with Customs for the country shipping to, make sure all necessary paperwork is completed and find out if there will be any duty and/or taxes that will need to be paid. If so, can the recipient handle that?

This is VERY true. I tried to ship the RAM that came with 7,1 overseas to Mac Rumors Poster in The Netherlands but it was sent back and caused many 'duty' hardships for that person. I felt really bad about the inconvenience of his time.

You also need to check with the shipping company if they allow lithium batteries inside computers. The IATA has some regulations on this. I think the classic Mac Pro has the CR2032 coin lithium battery.

If I’m not mistaken, lithium batteries might be allowed in sea freight shipping and not in air shippings. It might have something to do with the batteries interfering with the airplain electronics. ( not sure ) Though one solution is to request the seller of the Mac Pro to remove the coin battery from the cMac Pro before shipping out.
