hi...thinking about selling my macbook pro c2d 15in 2.16ghz..and buying a sony vaio sz 360 premium instead...mainly because of the lcd....the lcd is far superior on the 360..brightness, colors, sharpness...the mbp is a little too grainy for me and hard on the eyes...i can get the premium from frys for 2199...i love the mac osx...but i just don't know about the macbook pro display..and vista doesn't look so bad...the sz is the only laptop i'm interested in....is this a good idea..or u think i just keep the mbp?...u think there will be a fix with the grainy issue? (x1600 issue?)

I'd imagine, since it seems the "grainy" issue is related to the X1600 driver, not the panel itself, that a software fix in a future OS X update could take care of it. Personally, I'd kep the MacBook Pro. OS X is still head and shoulders above Vista, and Leopard will be even more so.

you really think they're going to fix the grainy problem?...since some people don't even notice it and its kinda subjective...if this is a more video card problem then i think they would...but aren't people saying its because of the lcd quality itself?..which then probably wouldn't be fixed.

Are you serious? Keep the MBP...First of all Windows is horrible...and Vista isn't much better...its a cheap imitation of tiger. It has a weak spotlight feature and "gagdets" instead of widgets...My roommates running the released version and the Headphone jack doesn't even work. The MBP looks better on the outside as well. If you really want the vaio, get it...its not our computer, so who cares what we say.

Last time I read up on it, the general consensus was that it was an issue related to the X1600, more specifically the software side of the X1600 in the MacBook Pros, not the panel itself.

well since u all seem to think there will be a fix since its moreso related to the x1600..then i will keep my mbp =)..that was my only issue with it...since the LCD is very important to me

doesn't the mbp 17in use the same exact video card x1600?..how come the grainess on that lcd isn't as severe as the 15in?..i would think that if its a video card problem the 17in would look the exact same with the grainiess as the 15in

Wow, I just looked it up on Sony's website and that SZ looks like a nice laptop. Great specs. But even if you're getting a higher quality LCD, is it worth moving down from a 15" to a 13" LCD? I say this because I have a MacBook and when I'm at home I have it plugged into an external LCD because 13" is not enough real estate.
If you can live with the smaller screen as long as it's nicer go with the Sony, as much as I'm an OS X fan, Windows isn't that bad if you know how to maintain it.

Do whatever feels best. I returned my MBP since I was also utterly disgusted by the screen and crap build of it. Im in limbo now and dont know what to do, might get a pc and a mini...but Im not spending any more money on Apple portables.

have you seen the new ad that sony Australia put on their website?

Its a copy of the Get a Mac ad, but with a new "non-PC PC" member.
and yes, there's a whole debate on how the term PC engulfs Mac computers, Windows based computers, as well as VAIOs. By definition, a Mac is a Personal Computer. but now PC has become synonymous with Windows.

after the lack of originality in their ad, i'd say dont sell it.

edit: I have no clue where Sony Australia is going with a punk/emo looking character. Why is the ad so random? A farting PC? Who's in charge of their marketing division? cause whoever it is deserves to be fired.

I'm not sure it's a similar model, but I have the SZ2VP - a Core duo 2.16, the previous model to the SZ3VP. It's noisier than the Macbook Pro (and as a result it doesn't turn into a barbecue grill) but in terms of having something actually portable, the Sony blows the Mac away completely.

A shade under 1.7Kg for real, fully loaded with the same performance as the MBP.

Battery saving modes with dual display adapter (Macbook-like GMA950 for when saving power, Geforce when real graphics are needed).

The screen is really nice, better than the Apple laptops I've had in terms of quality, but the size may be a turn-off for some especially if this is your 'do everything' laptop. I generally find that the resolution and screen size is an acceptable tradeoff for having something relatively unintrusive. The build quality of the premium Sony laptops is something that Apple these days can't match.

One (always) Sony let down is the power brick. It's big. Why Sony, why?

But if you get around a lot and you want power on the move, Apple doesn't have anything to counter the SZ series. The carbon fibre lid is also raven-like as it changes shades with the light. Quite mysterious :D

First of all the grainy display will NOT BE FIXED BY DRIVERS!!! It is an issue of the coating or something, if you move a window around you'll realize the grains don't move. It's just part of the matte coating, no big deal, but if it bothers you enough switch out because there is no way to ever get it fixed.

I plan on replacing my LCD eventually myself when the backlight starts to become dim in a few years, for a higher res LCD.

haha! That's a funny one!

I used to own a Sony Vaio notebook and it died right after a year. No more Sony notebook for me. I sold my MBP CD 2G after 2 months but I am very happy with my MBP C2D 2.16G.

good decision. I've compared many screens (including desktop LCDs) and it looks like all of them have some sort of "grain" or another. I think we're just being too nit-picky.

No, were not. Its true that most of the screens out there have grain, its a natural part of a matte screen BUT on the MBPC2D its to much. At least on mine it was, and also on my replacement and the ones I have seen in Apple Stores over here..but if it doesnt bother you than you shouldnt return it. I wish it didnt bother me. :(

I think they will probably fix the grainy issue, on the later weeks production. To the once produces before that, maybe....

Anyhow, I think you should wait until the end of Jan. Why? If you are going to get a sony, you may also want vista to be on it as well.
