I wish they'd do that... That would be a perfect companion for a digital camera, much smaller than my MBP or the old 800 iBook G3 I got for that purpose.

Make it a touch screen so that you don't need a mouse and have it so that the screen flips all the way back so it can be used in a tablet form and i'll order one today!!!!

the next iBook?

Ever since the Macbook came out, I've wondered what would happen to the "iBook" name. "PowerBook" is done, of course, but the i* name is very much still around (iLife, iWork, etc.). I can really see Apple bringing back the iBook name as a little tiny laptop like your awesome picture.

Although they still need to include 'mac' in the name, so iMacbook mayhaps?

I am glad you liked it.

I will make the few changes suggested.

The screen would definetively have to be "touchscreen". I also thought of adding a stylus. Also I need to figure out where to place the speakers.

Sorry about the windows key, I knew someone would noticed. I will have to change that too.

As you can see its "running" Leopard. now I am not sure haw big or small this would be so I am not sure if a superdrive would fit. I guess It would have to be external.

About the name, how about "iPAD"? (maybe too close to HP´s "ipaq")

I would if it ran OSX, 40GB HD and had 10+ hr battery and was under $1000. Would be great for travel with.

I actually have this idea in my head, have for awhile now.

Searched round for touchscreen info, and this thread popped up.

Strange how its almost exactly what I am envisioning.

problems such as finding an LCD that fits properly, are proving to be the hard part.

Scrapping together various iBook and Powerbook external and internal parts, would be where the casing, logicboard, ports, video out, RAM, HDD, battery, airport could come from. Id forgo an optical drive for space concerns.

Figuring out how to get the correct dimensions is difficult.

First, id want the size to be about 100% the same as a laptop keyboard. As the picture shows. But finding an LCD screen that is the same size, thats a problem. Width, not so much, but height is very difficult.

The point of me doing this is to basically drop the touchpad, going with touchscreen, drop the optical, and shrink the whole form factor. I think it could be done, if only a screen that fit "good enough" could be found....

MacBooklet is a cute name, but too similar to the MacBook. If they made an ultraportable I'm sure they'd want it to have its own identity.

Maybe call this a MacPad.

Add a mouse pointer button a la Lenovo Thinkpad ...
H*** no! I would rather use text only console indefinitely than having one of those things messing up my keyboard... those mouse pointer buttons are the worst invention, ever...

Just get a wireless mighty mouse and enable arrow keys for mouse movement whenever the cat has run off with the mouse... :)

off the battery of a mac portable?

in other words, could you use a 12vDC needing LCD strictly off of the logicboard/battery of a mac portable... im googlin for some tech specs, but im no electrical engineer....

The L7400 Core 2 Duo chip (1.5GHz, 4MB cache, low voltage) is due in January. MWDC announcement of something along these lines?

Heck ya I want one.
Touch screen so we can loose the mouse and the AV out jack from an iPod would make it ULTRA portable and connective!
They should even throw an HDMI out on it.
And make blue-ray or HD-DVD a drive option.
Nice concept art yo.

i brought this thread back to pose a few questions, scroll up....

or not:

will a 12vDC LCD screen be powered somehow from a logicboard/battery of a portable?

I believe this can be done. I used to be heavy into case modding and did similar things to this back then, if it doesnt work the other option would be to special make a power cord that had inputs for the monitor and the computer in it, the cord would be one cord that plugged into the laptop 2x, and had to plugs on the end. Would be a tad funky, but not too bad and very functional.
