If you're coming from any other <$1,799 Intel Mac the M1 outperforms it hands down.

What it lacks though is screen size being limited to 13" for laptops & 24" for desktops.

So would you buy a M1 with a 16" laptop display or a 27" or 32" desktop display?

Macbook Air should be 12" and 14". Pro 14" and 16". An 16" Air seems kinda silly to me.
Like prior; 11" and 13" for the Air vs 13" and 15" (17") for the Pro.

12" Air (LCD) with M2 -> entry level
14" Air (LCD) with M2/Pro* -> entry, mid*
14" Pro (XDR) with Pro/Max -> mid, high
16" Pro (XDR) with Pro/Max -> mid, high

*) Could lead to cannibalism effects of the 14" MBP
For the iMac, 24" (4.5K) and 32" (6K), maybe with a 27" (5K) to narrow the gap.
The 32" combines all iMac features with the Pro XDR Display.

24" (LCD) with M2/Pro -> entry, mid
27" (LCD) with Pro/Max -> mid, high
32" (XDR) with Pro/Max -> mid, high

Mini with M2/Pro/Max -> entry, mid, high
Pro with MaxQuad or whatever -> best

we're using a m1 mini with a 27" display, but ideally
need a mini-desktop mac pro replacement with
a 32" screen to replace my old mac pro with a 30" screen

where's that choice in the poll

I'm tired of waiting for the 27" iMac, and I've gotten to love my intel MBA as a my media consumption device. So I am looking to consolidate to a 16" MBP soon, and then get an external monitor (or use my iMac) for a second display when I actually need a larger screen for photo work. The MBP will be more powerful than my existing iMac, and also give me the ability to use it wherever I want to, unlike my iMac, which is stationed in my second floor studio and kind of out of the way.

Would love to see Apple branded monitors again, but at realistic prices...

24", 27", 30" consumer/prosumer models; and then the 32" Pro Display, which is hyper expensive; $7.5k for the Nano glass model, a stand, & AppleCare; and I have to shell out another 200 bucks to a third-party for a webcam...?

Obviously use the same panels as the respective iMac models (assuming a 30" iMac Pro)...

But to actually address the original post, the bigger the panel, the more powerful SoC Apple will put in it...?

So if you want an entry/mid-level Mn-series SoC in a larger iMac, the actual way to get that would be with a low/mid-end Mac mini & an Apple display (see above)...

bought a 14 inch M1 MacBook Pro and paired it with a new widescreen 27” monitor and Logitech bluetooth mouse and keyboard (The monitor, mouse and keyboard are all white it looks great on the desktop:) -

now I have portability for when I am on the move & I can dock it when I’m @ home for extra productivity:)

Waiting on a M1 Max-powered Mac mini, have two 31.5" 2560x1440 IPS panels to pair it with...

Just wish I could get a Mac variant of my Hexgears X1 low-profile mechanical keyboard...!

There is a massive price gap between the $999 Macbook Air M1 and the $2000 14" MacBook Pro.

I assume the 13" Macbook Pro with touch bar will be deprecated soon.

This means Apple needs a laptop to plug the gap between the Air and the 14" Pro.

My guess is that we will see a $1500 16" Macbook Air.

I already have a Samsung SyncMaster SA850T as a 2nd Display, (2560x1440) so I'm fine with my 24" iMac.
And I can add my 10.9" iPad as a 3rd Display using Sidecar if necessary - it works like a charm too.

Maybe I buy a faster/stronger iMac in 1-2 years, but I definitly dont need a larger display.

M1's more powerful than any Intel Mac excluding the pro desktops.

So when its that powerful why not stick to a M1?

Placing an M1 into more form factors increase the volume of these basic chips.

I'd easily justify a
  • $1,499-1,999 MBA 16" M1 16GB memory 512GB storage.
  • $1,799 iMac 32" M1 16GB memory 512GB storage.

Same here except I'm 27" 4k regular 16x9. The new 14" runs great in clamshell mode, or multi-display.

I have had enough issues, and upgrades, with my 2011 iMac, that I want a separate monitor next time. I was able to fix most hardware issues, but as this was the last model that wasn't glued completely together, I don't count on that being possible next time.

Mac Mini it is for me, but I would definitely like a quality 5k2k 30-34"ultrawide HDR600 120+hz display to go with it.

I'm waiting for a 27" or larger iMac, but I am worried about the price, considering they're likely to stick a Pro or Max chip in it.

The more sellable form factors Apple can squeeze its silicon into, the greater the economies of scale they can achieve. As it stands, it looks like a tricked out, M1 Pro Max iMac Pro is going smoke anything that doesn’t have the very best GPU hardware available to Intel based systems (and smoke the very best anyway, for some workflows*).

* Thinking Pro Res for those who produce a lot of video and who also use Pro Res.

I really hope not. MacBook is often used as a general term for all apple notebooks. So if they just had MacBook, you still have to specify what you’re referring to in conversation, as we did back when it was a product.

“The 14” non-pro MacBook” for example.

With iPhone, it works because you specify iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 15 etc. but we don’t do that for any MacBooks. We could add the year to it I guess but then again now you’re complicating things again.

What I hope for is this:

13” MacBook SE
13” MacBook Air
15” MacBook Air
14” MacBook Pro
16” MacBook Pro

Having the SE and Air still using 13” screens will help keep cost lower for consumers, and apple can use older designs (and thus cheaper production) for the SE.

Which iPhone...? SE, mini, regular, Pro, Pro Max...? ;^p

With the transition to Apple silicon, new designs across the board are called for, no recycling old designs; I am sure the M1-powered 13" MacBook Air & 13" MacBook Pro will be axed soon...?

Exactly. That’s my whole point: You have to specify something in any scenario. So why not just have it be the actual name of the product: I.e. MacBook *fill in the blank* And then you can abbreviate it easily by saying the 2020 13” Air - easy.

Which iPhone...? SE, mini, regular, Pro, Pro Max...? ;^p
When you just say “iPhone” people know you’re taking about the whole category of iPhone. If you want to specify a particular iPhone, you will use some sort of additional descriptor like “iPhone 14 mini”

With the transition to Apple silicon, new designs across the board are called for, no recycling old designs
Says who? There’s no reason they have to use new designs for an SE, and in fact Apple has always used older designs for SE products. Why does the iPhone SE use an old design? Why does the Apple Watch SE use an old design? They all use apple silicon too.

Though honestly I am really waiting for M1P or M1M in the iMac because in 5-10 years time many more apps will make use of multiple threads/cores and this will help with future proofing.
