I really don't think Merom is going to be so revolutionary to force most Mac users to switch.

I mean, people bought G4 PowerBooks for YEARS... :D

yeah but im a pc user and a gamer. I want the 4mb of cache and the EM64T cause I'll be running Vista x64 RC1 on it for sure.

I won't. The simple fact that Windows brings the anti-malware necessity makes all other PC-brands off-limits.
I'll wait as long as it takes for MBP/C2D.

looks like apple has nothing to worry about... lol either way they are getting our money :(

That's exactly right. Hey.... when does their next quarter start? Might be in their best interest to release the new MBP at the start of their next financial quarter, since every single person on this forum... and then some.... will apparently be buying. :D

how soon is "soon"? everyday there are people say "next tuesday", its becoming weird to hear that. C2D won't stop this cycle, didn't you see the post about waiting for santa rosa or whatever that name is?

I'm looking at the 11.1" Sony Vaio computer. That thing is amazingly small. I feel like I could fit it in my back pocket. (well, you couldn't really. A sweatshirt pocket though, perhaps) Plus they managed to fit an optical drive in there, bonus!

i don't know why people would buy a different brand if C2D doesn't comed out, just buy a core duo

Simple. Apple's laptops are already priced at the top of the market, especially the MBPs. The kind of specs these things have is simply a disgrace for the kind of price they are going for.

Besides they have heaps of design issues, what good is a ventless hot and dent susceptible computer with a slow processor going to do for me when I can get a sleek 11" MAGNESIUM alloy Vaio? Oh, and with a faster processor.

OSX is nice but the allure only goes so far, if I need it that bad I will just get the hacked version. It is illegal, but who here didn't break a law before? Especially if it is a *stupid law*. Running a hacked version of OSX is no worse than using a region free DVD player. Think about it. Big deal.

Exactly. Now that Apple is on Intel, the only real difference is the OS. We can compare like to like. When we see other companies with similar market share (like Sony) come out with these great products quickly, but Apple is slow, why should we buy Apple? Windows isn't great, but it can get things done and it you are more enterprising there is always *nix.

clevin - you are correct - this cycle will go on and on. However, once I buy I won't be spending time on a notebook decision until that time again. Many of us have been holding off because the MBP line is overdue for a Rev B and has been right around the corner since pre-WWDC, and every Tuesday since then, and on and on and on...........

Actually...

I need a couple of pieces of software to go Universal before an Intel Mac is a worthwhile purchase for me. Also, my PowerBook isn't even 3 years old yet - plenty of life left.

I'll get a MacBook Pro when it makes sense for my usage.

Now that we know that about 80% of ppl are waiting for C2D MBP to be released (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/232083/) I'm wondering if any of you that are waiting are considering buying another brand (like a Dell or a Sony) if the C2D MBP/MB dont come out soon?

I will be getting a new Dell for work (Core 2 Duo) pretty soon, but I'm not excited about it at all. I will wait as long as it takes for the C2D MBP to come out because that is ultimately what I will be doing all of my photography stuff on! I might get a Mac Pro eventually, but that's not relevant...

Ok I admit it, the train pulled out of the station and left me behind, but can someone please tell me what (Core 2 Duo) is?

2 generation of intels current Core Duo chips which are based on the Core architecture. More info here.

exactly... now that they have intel chips they have to update their products to stay competitive with the rest of the market...

i agree that apple has to stay competitive.. their MBP price seems ridiculous considering the specs and what you can get other laptops for.. BUT i personally will never buy another windows machine, so it definitely wouldn't sway me into, say, Dell's arms. OSX and the style of the laptops are enough to keep me (plus I think the current MBs are pretty well priced considering it IS apple). for those that don't mine windows, then i'd definitely understand the inclination to shop elsewhere, though.

I don't really care about the C2D, I hope the new one will fix the heat and quality issues they have currently. I managed to crash the current MBP in 5 minutes of play in the Apple store the other day. :(

Woah

Did that machine feel warm or something? This is kinda disturbing, I thought they fixed it up in the more recent machines.

The machine was not warm, it's was hot! Lets just say I wouldn't be comfortable holding it in my hands, the bottom side in the rear middle part anyway. I checked out all of them (around 6), they were all too warm for me, and they were just sitting there with the screen saver on. I can't imagine what they would be like opening and editing a 300+ meg photoshop file. They might melt. :D

Oh, and as far as what I was doing to it that made it crash, I tired opening FCP, PS, iphoto, itunes, and a few other programs all at once just to see what it will do. The icons in the dock were jumping up and down, none of them would open up and after about two minutes, the screen went blank. It was a 2.16ghz with 2 gig ram machine.

One of the guy who works a the apple store came over and asked if I needed help, I told him it crashed. He asked me if I knew how to force quit an application. I then told him the screen just went blank, he walked away. :D

Actually, there is a rather large heat vent in the Macbook Pro, right near the screen's hinge. The real problem lies in the fact that the fans are not directed towards this heat vent, but are directed upwards towards the top of the case.

You could get an 11' Magnesium alloy Vaio, but it would run windows, and the screen would be smaller. Are you really going to contend that the Core Duo is "slow" ? I think you need to rethink that one. You must be one of those who thinks that Core 2 Duo will help you type faster.

My... does being an Mac user mean I am supposed to be an engineer?

Screen would be smaller so? I always wanted a 12" anyway.

Whether Core 2 Duo is slow or not is not relevant, I don't need Apple to tell me that Core 2 is not big enough an improvement over Core and that I don't need it. I want it for future proofing when Windows Vista/Leopard ships, Apple's own agenda is irrelevant to me.
