Hi All,
I have an Apple TV 2 connected to my 42" TV in my living room. In your opinion, would it be worth it to upgrade to the new ATV 3?

Keep these two things in mind.
1) Is the new A5 that much better that the previous A4?

2) At the young at of 50 will I to see a difference in the picture? I guess I shouldn't just think of me, my kids and grandkids would watch it too, but I doubt if it really matters to them.

Let me know what you think,

Thanks
Joe

If you're not currently jailbroken and if you've got an extra $100 lying around then go for it.
More for the future-proofing than the video quality.
If you are jailbroken or if $100 is any kind of burden then you probably shouldn't.

you might see a difference, it all depends on the available content, which is still catching up.

if the current one is working for you, i would wait till the next gen comes out, hopefully with app support.

That's a good thought. Thank you.

I'm probably going to pick one up and sell my AppleTV 2. It looks like they're going for $60-75 on CraigsList, even more if you're jailbroken.

Similar question:

Thinking of paying $69 for a refurb ATV2 instead of $99 because I'm not one of those people who just has cash lying around.

The main thing to keep in mind is I'm just fine with maxing out at 720HD instead of 1080HD. But I do plan on doing a substantial amount of airplay mirroring.

Any advice is welcome, thanks!

As soon as you upgrade, you are going to notice, I have my ATV2 in the bedroom at present, my new ATV3 in the lounge, the difference is very noticeable, I got a spam email form some company offering trade ins for the 2 yesterday, I deleted it, but it looked okay.

If your HDTV supports 1080p, I would splurge and get the ATV3 if your primary usage is Airplay mirroring. You'll appreciate the finer resolution and quality sound, believe me.

As an aside, I also wish to point out Mountain Lion will support Airplay at 1080p so you could much more easily mirror OSX devices, as well. Technically, that be done now at additional cost without Mountain Lion by using the licensed AirParrot app. Doing so for some users might also involve (for example) a 1080p after market transmitter/receiver pair and a special DVI->HDMI adapter. The ATV3 offers a much welcomed solution more simply and cost effectively integrate full 1080p, WIFI, 24 bit audio mirroring on compatible iOS or OSX devices. This is well worth noting, I think.

I upgraded. Mainly because most of my HD purchased content from iTunes had 1080p versions waiting for me to download and for future changes. Overall I can tell a small difference between the 720 and 1080. Certain things definitely look better with the 1080p. Other things not so much.

If I had only my own ripped content, I probably wouldn't have upgraded.

I held off buying an Apple TV for years before v2, hoping they would go to 1080p. When it turned out to be only 720p I couldn't wait any longer and bought it anyway.

However since the ATV2 now seems able to play 1080p (even though it's output in 720p) I may keep it for another year or two before upgrading, just to get my money's worth. Meanwhile, I'll keep growing my 1080p library ...

Why not? It's a no-brainer for $99. I haven't (yet) but will be in the very near future. I plan to move my ATV2 units to other rooms. (The refurb ATV2 @ 69 are not a shabby deal, either.)

I enjoy my Apple TV2, I also have a WD TV Live. I like them both for different reasons. With that in mind, I feel I have the both of worlds. The upgrade from ATV 2 to ATV 3 is similar to upgrading from a iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S. Nice upgrade but I'm very happy with what I have now. I may give my ATV 2 to a friend, if I do, I'll get the ATV3.

Wirelessly posted

I think the only reason to buy one is iff u didnt have one in the first place those who choose to swap it out with the 2 would be aswell getting the cheaper roku hd but im more than happy with my jb atv2

I sold my ATV 2 for $65 last week and upgraded. It only took a few hours on craigslist to sell it-- so I probably could have held out for more. Evidently, there still is a huge demand for ATV 2s.

I've upgraded mine, but I'm not getting rid of my ATV2 until a Jailbreak is available for the new one. I use plex on the ATV2 which is one reason I'm dragging my feet a bit on the new one, but my experience with it has been great thus far.
