Apple's trade-in for my 14 MBP M1 is $700. Would you take that and get 15 MBA M4?

Not enough information there to provide any sort of answer. Here's the questions you would need to answer first:

- What are the specs of the M1 MBP?
- How are you using the MBP?
- Do you find yourself running short on memory and/or storage when running apps on the M1?
- How many ports do you need to use?
- Are you running any external displays? If so, how many and at what resolution?

No. Bigger screen does not mean better. MBP display is higher res, twice as bright, and 120hz. You will notice a difference. Speakers are also much better on the MBP than MBA.

the air's screen is plenty bright. not everyone needs fast refresh rate. for a lot of people, a bigger screen is indeed better. i'd even argue the six speakers of the 15" air is at least as good as the speakers on the 14" pro.

if you need fast refresh rate, if you watch a lot of hdr content, then maybe the macbook pro is for you. if you need a bigger screen, and the 15" is appreciably bigger than the 14", then go for the air.

Only you can decide if that's a tradeoff worth it to you.

We don't know what the specs are on that M1. Is it an M1 Max with 10-core CPU and 32-core GPU, 64 GB RAM and an 8 TB SSD, and you'd be trading it for a base-model M4? No, almost certainly *NOT* worth it.

I wouldn't do that. If you have your heart set on an upgrade just go for the 14 Inch M4. The 15 inch has a significantly larger footprint compared to the 14 inch, so the weight to size ratio balances out between the two. Why are you thinking of upgrading?

The 15" Air speakers are not as good as the 14" Pro. Sounds like the Air fits your needs, that's great.
