I have the chance to "upgrade" my hex for a 2.93 12 core for around $300, do you think it's worth it? Or will I be better of with the higher clock speed of the hex core?

Main usage is Aperture, Final Cut X and design work, all comments welcome
:-D

What kind of design work? Basically, if your work load has a good amount of multi-threaded computing, you'll see better performance. If it's mostly single-threaded, you'll see slightly worse.

You can upgrade it to dual x5680/90 down the road and extend it's life further, seems to be a good deal for $300.

Let me try to sort this out. Are you saying you could get "a 2.93 12 core for around $300"? So "upgrading" from a 3.33 Hex to 2.93 12 core which also requires a processor tray swap only costs $300? Either I am missing something or this deal is too good to pass it even if you don't need it.

To me it sounds like either a processor tray or entire system swap plus $300.

Thanks for the replies, just to clarify my situation....

I currently have a hex core and have a buyer lined it up for it. I have been offered the 12 core at a great price, the difference between the two is $300.

I'm just not sure if I would notice the performance hit on the single core operations. I use some pre-press software by Esko Graphics, all single core programs. Between Aperture, Final Cut X and the Esko software the usage is evenly spread making my decision that bit harder.

Any more advice appreciated.

The 12-core will support 128GB RAM, whereas the 6-core tops out at 48GB. Not sure if you'll need that much memory, but that's one advantage.

Hi Wispy007. For single thread tasks probably there is not much speed difference or may not be night and day between the hexcore and 12 core. For video work, the 12 core will be faster and more ram flexibility. I would say go for the 12 core 2.93ghz as the $300 difference is a good deal.
