I said no because it would take Apple years to build out their own infrastructure. Something they simply lack the $$$ to do.

They would have to lease tower bandwidth from existing providers.
This would make then nothing more than another Cricket Wireless (They lease bandwidth on Verizon towers).
 
According to published reports, Apple approached Cingular first about becoming a MVNO, and they decided it was a bad idea:

Why would Apple want to get blamed for all the network problems, when they could just make money off devices and take a slice of carrier income?

This exactly. I've never heard of a company like apple doing this...in this economy you really don't want to attempt to juggle a wireless phone network AND a computer company when you can sit back and watch your profits grow off a few profitable products like the iPhone, MacBook, etc. I for one couldn't imagine trying to start a cellphone service off any standard in this day and age. Maybe outside the US but the US is just too big to try and cover completely.
 
Sure would, why not?

If apple is doing it, I'd give it a go, no problem. I've never been disappointed, why think I would be if they had their own system?
 
That would depend on two things -

1. Quality of service
2. Pricing

Being in Australia, where there is already a choice of 5 carriers, it would come down to whether they offered reception as good as what's already on offer, and how their pricing was. If they were equal to my carrier now in those two respects, yeah, I would probably give it a go.
 
They definitely wouldn't have their own network; they'd be a MVNO. That said, if they provided access to a GOOD network (would probably have to be AT&T or Verizon in the States) and offered sane calling+data plans at least no more expensive than the competition, then I'd go with them. It still won't solve any infrastructure problems though.
 
Just from the firmware updates, not really.

Apple would take FOREVER to update their iTowers (cell towers) for "new" technology like iMMS or iVoicemail because they would only push out those carrier updates when new firmware is out.
