Hi MR Forum Peeps.

HYPOTHETICAL - What would you do question:

I have the New-ish late 2018 MacMini. Max specs for everything (except just a 1TB Hard Drive)

New M1 Mini would only have 16GB of Ram (vs 32GB) and same 1TB Hard Drive ($1299 in the bag)

With a trade in I can get $690 credit.... so the new machine would be just $609.

Having ZERO Reason to upgrade.... except to play with Apples New Chip.... like a good Fan Boy.

What would you do?

Just thought it would be fun to see the would and would not rationals.

Cheers

I agree with cw48494 on this - buy an entry level M1 device and enjoy it! I traded in a 2013 Mac Pro, and the cost for a 16Gig/512Gb Mini was only around $200 - well worth the small cost....

Keep what you have for now and see what the next offering looks like.

My opinion is - the M1 is really all that and more, get what you want now, tomorrow belongs to God alone!

I can see the doubts on people when choosing the now or later for the newest model. In my mind it is an impossible chase to have, there will always be a new model. I usually keep my main computer for 2-3 years, but if something comes up before that I really want and am able to afford I just go for it.

If $700 means nothing to you then just upgrade otherwise wait like 4-5 years until your computer actually might need an upgrade.

I would keep the last intel Mac mini, which would be good for virtualization and buy the cheapest m1 to toy with...

Keep the computer you have.

There's no point in upgrading just to upgrade. If you have no real need to replace what you have, you're basically taking a lighter to your money. Some people have money to burn. I don't but then I'm special.

I can think of a thousand other things to spend my money on other than a new computer... mainly because there is absolutely nothing wrong with the one I have... and it's over 12 years old.

Trust me, if you buy an M1 today, you'll only replace it when then next generation comes out. Because if you fell for the hype on this model, wait until you get steam-rolled with the hype for the next one... and the one after that and the one after that. In the end, do you really need to get things done faster? Hey boss, I got done with the report, how about sending another stack over to my desk? I just love being buried with work and this new computer allows me not even a moment of free time now!

As someone who went through three M1's (and we have an M1 MBA in the house), I would say wait at this point.

Since I already have an M1 MBP, I would probably wait until the next release to replace my desktop machine. That way I can have additional funds set aside for the purchase and have a wider selection of products to choose from. I could still wind up going with an M1 Mini at that point, but I'd have options to go in another direction if that would best fit my use case for the desktop replacement.

I would keep the Mini. Your i7 should provide you with plenty of CPU horsepower and your 32 GB of RAM should be able to keep everything in memory, both your programs and your cached files. You can run 3x4k displays if you want to.

We have an i3 Mini that my wife uses and I bought it for her so that she wouldn't ask me tech support questions (previous system was Windows 10 desktop). It gets the job done. I could upgrade her but I don't think that she'd really notice the difference.

The M1X, when it comes out, will likely be a different story.

I would say go for it, considering that our Intel macs are only plummeting in trade-in value at this point in time.
