Wouldnt it be better if Apple combined iBooks & Newstand?

And made it an optional app to download from the app store? Like you know how in iBooks you have Books, PDFs, they could just add Magazines below or something....

Exactly what I was thinking. Yet another app that I don't need on my home screen. I'm surprised they still haven't let us choose the default apps.

I think the main difference between the two is that books contain set content, whereas magazine content changes every month. The benefit of Newsstand is that you can see if a new issue of an app is out without having to open anything. If you mix that in with books then it would be a little less useful and a little more complicated.

Not so good to have a single app if you have lots of books. Who's on top? Books or magazines? Or just mix by title? I have lots of books and it seems like a mess to me. Seeing how hard it is to sort through lots of books on the Nook and Kindle apps, I prefer the organization of iBooks and I am happy to see my magazines kept separate. Instead of combining them, I suggest that you combine all of your reader apps into a Books or Reading folder, then they are together in one icon and you can select the app you want to read in. iBooks, Newstand, Nook or Kindle. No more issues.

They can't.

Newsstand is simply a folder of Newstand-enabled apps. If you download the Wired app, you'll notice it shows up on your home screen while it's downloading and then moves into Newsstand.

You can't move it into a folder because iOS doesn't allow subfolders.

Technically speaking, stuff in iBooks and stuff in Newsstand are quite different. iBooks contains pdfs, epubs, and/or whatever iBook's proprietary format is. These are all just static documents. The "magazines" in Newsstand are actually real apps that have some special features to make them work with Newsstand. So while it may not be technically impossible to combine the two, it probably makes more sense to keep them separate.
