I just clicked on "Play" in Keynote, and my Mac instantly shut down. No grey screen, no warning, no nothing. Black, instantaneous. Never seen anything like it in 20 years of Apple.

I rebooted and the whole thing just came back to life, no problem, all flles intact. As long as it doesn't happen again, I don't care, but has anyone else seen anything like that?

just there sharing the mac experience

Kind of off-topic, but it reminds me of those anti-Mac ads:

"One of the coolest features of the Macintosh, is it's really easy to shut down. All you have to be doing is using a piece of software and poof! it goes away, it's gone, it's shut down! You didn't push any buttons, you didn't close, you didn't even save. It's just gone."

Those amuse me so much, I realize they're inaccurate but if you look at it from a neutral point of view they're quite amusing.

But anyways, nothing like that has ever happened to me. If it happens only once, I wouldn't worry about it. If it keeps on happening then I'd get it checked by Apple.

Except that in the old days, at least you used to get the bomb or some bizarre error messages. Now you just lose the programme (OK, I've had the spinning beachball of death a few times, and a couple of weird slow grey-screens). But Black Death? Never before...

There was a problem with random shutdowns with the MacBook that was fixed with a firmware update. See here for more details.

When the iMacs first came out my school got them, and it occured alot... OS9 was horrible compared to OSX... I would even say it is the equivalent of Windows 98:eek:

yes as its a firmware update

I did the firmware update when it came out, so it wasn't that. The only bad thing that came out of it was that Word decided (for the nth time, but for the first time on this machine) to give me that irritating "X Font is corrupted" message. I have been through the whole deleting caches etc etc, about 5 times now, and I'm still not sure it's fixed. Oh well...

If things were particularly hot it might be a thermal shutdown. I'd check the system log file to see if there's any indication of the issue there. I'd look both in the logs from the apple menu->about this mac->more info-> logs and do a sudo dmesg | more from the command line.

sorry my response was to the person who posted above me about whether new macs ship with the update. as for your problem that is unfortunate. my macbook was a victim to rss, just crashed for no reason at all but luckily the firmware update fixed it. i would call apple since if you are like me, i need a reliable computer

When the iMacs first came out my school got them, and it occured alot... OS9 was horrible compared to OSX... I would even say it is the equivalent of Windows 98:eek:

I used Windows 98 and OS 9 at the same time (on different computers of course).

I found OS 9 to crash all the time, and hated that it never multi-tasked right. I found that background operations always stopped when I switched a different program to the foreground. For example, websites loading in my browser would stop loading if I switched to AppleWorks.

So, I had to wait for tasks to complete before switching to another Application. Otherwise, I'd have to switch back to the other Application and wait (or else restart the process over again if it timed-out).

OS 9 was much better than 8.6 in those respects. But, it was still a royal pain.

I would actually equate OS 9 and older versions to Windows 3.0 (yes 3.0 not 3.1). Well, O.K., I'll give it some credit, I'll be generous and call the final OS 9.2.2 release comparable to Windows 3.1.

OS X is definitely a much better environment. Switching to OS X was probably the best thing Apple ever did. It took away all my complaints (though it added a few new ones which I've resolved with the purchase of 3rd-party programs).
