Things sure aren't what they used to be. I walked into the Verizon store today (at 5PM) and much to my surprise I walked out with XS Max. Traded in my X. I was really just going in to look at a display model to see what it looked like in person. Didn't imagine they would have them in stock. Close......they didn't have any more space greys. But silver and gold? No prob.

That price obviously keeps a lot of people away. Nothing like the days of the $200 subsidized phone.

There's another device coming later this year. See you in a couple of years when you post again

A lot of people are buying online, and it seems like stock is plentiful. Lines on launch day isn’t a good measure of demand anymore.

Not too long ago the only place to grab an iPhone was apple or att. So of course lines would have been huge.... I can walk into my local Target and grab a Max.

It's an S year. They have the manufacturing experience of the X, in addition to all of the phones since the last major redesign (6), and that likely allowed them to build up enough stock this year. Not to mention, online orders are likely increasing as well. It could also be lower demand. None of knows or will know until the first earnings report that includes the new phones.

But there was a time that when a new iPhone came out, you couldn't get it at 5PM of launch day. Not in the carrier stores, the Apple Store, online.....nowhere. You had to wait a few weeks. I think things are different.

Perhaps they've optimized their operations a little bit over the past 10 years?

Perhaps more people are ordering online?

Perhaps a lot of people are waiting for the Xr?

OP fails to mention where he experienced crickets. In Chicago the crowds made the news. Maybe it’s always crickets where you live.

It's a combination of things. This is also a S release and there doesn't appear to be any shortages.

Apple learned their lesson from backordered iphones. They had said they would have plenty available for launch day and they delivered. Why are people never happy? Cry when they can't get a phone on launch day and then get all uppity when plenty are available on launch day. Who cares?

Was still a line when I went back to my apple store around 5pm. Another store I had to go to had a constant line.

While i just bought a red 8+ as I don’t care for the new format, i didn’t get the cricket feel.

It’s not like back in 2011/12/13 when there were lines circling the Walmarts and Best Buy parking lots for new iPads and iPhones.

But I do think this will be a much larger launch than the 6s, 7, or 8 launches - especially once the Xr is out.

There were lineups at my local Apple store. The Max's sold out fairly quickly. There's two Apple stores in my city. But I'm in Canada and we don't get the subsidy deals you get in the US so maybe a greater percentage of iPhone users in Canada buy theirs directly from Apple? Not sure.

My apple stores line cleared in 30 min and they had enough for everyone and extra. I was very surprised as well. Could be cost.
