Just for the information of anyone that is considering bumping their machine up from 1gb to 2gb of RAM, I thought I would share my experience. My 2.16 C2D MBP was running well but I thought I would add another 1gb chip for good measure. The results were astounding! The machine now boots up about 30% faster, iPhoto is running twice as fast, and in general the Hard Disk seems to be working a lot less. It feels like a new machine. If your considering the upgrade, DO IT!

I've been meaning to upgrade the RAM in my iBook, but I just haven't had the money to order any. I probably, though, will buy some when there is a fairly cheap deal at Best Buy for the RAM.

Thanks. I've been deliberating over the 2.16 and 2.33 c2dmbps (say that three times fast!) and the extra RAM in the MBP just seals the deal.

Even though I could upgrade later, I'm lazy and would just like it BTO, plus i get the processor and graphics card perks thrown in.

Yes the 7200 helps as well :) How are you liking it so far?

Unfortunately UPS does not ship over the weekends (some do on Sat. which I thought in Gainesville they did) which is why I opted for overnight but it will be arriving tomorrow guaranteed. I'll let you know if I notice a difference in startup speed.

I would be interested about that H.D. swap as well. I am about to get a C2D 2.33 MBP and i am thinking about switching out the HD as soon as I get it.

Perfect. You are keeping your old drive correct? If you are get an enclosure for it and it will make a great external.

I was tempted to sell it but I am keeping it incase Apple refuses to perform service on my MB.

I'll try to remember to update.

I had a MBP CD w/ 7200 and it boot faster than my MBP C2D w/ 5400.

I think it would be worth it to swap out the 5400 for a Seagate 7200. You might check into when Seagate is going to release their new 7200 drives. I think a few months ago they announced a 160GB? 7200 drive.

i have a C2D with the 5400 in it, and it boots super fast - i certainly don't need it to boot any faster. But i've always been unsure how much the RAM affects booting.

Having had my MacBook C2D for a couple of weeks now and monitoring the amount of RAM used (using the great Menu Meters utility), I noticed that even with just Safari open for a couple of days the 1G memory was all taken and large swap files were being written to the drive. Parallels immediately swamped the RAM (even though I only allocated the actual app. 256 itself) and everything became very sluggish, reminiscent of VPC!

So my 2G upgrade has been ordered and is on it's way!

Related to boot times, more RAM should theoretically slow down the boot process, since there will be more memory to be tested on boot.

Whatever, ever since my iBook got 1.5 GB RAM I haven't shut it down, seems like a waste of time.

Oh, and the two times I did reboot, it was also a lot faster, it never got to the grey apple screen ^_^

With that machine, you will see a mega jump in performance. RAM means so much to 1) OSX 2) Dual Core Processors.

I remember upgrading from 256 to 1gb..... sheesh.

Wouldn't a 7200rpm HD play a role too?

I noticed phungy that you have a MB with 7200HDD. I was thinking of putting onein my MacBook 13" C2D (already upgraded to 2GB RAM). Have you had any problems with the 7200? I know Apple don't suggest putting one in but my local dealer said they didn't think there would be any problem.

My concerns were battery life and heat. How have you found these?

I use the MacBook primarilly for music. I thought I might enclose my current 5400 HDD to use as storage. Do you know of any problems using the slower external drive? Will the system run only at 5400 when I have the external plugged in?

I'm actually receiving the HD today, hopefully I'll have time to swap it out (classes starting and BSC championship) and test if starting up speed is noticeable. I'll most likely do the same and keep the stock HD in an enclosure. I'll also let you know about heat/battery life but I haven't test the battery life except once (lasted for 3.5 hrs with wireless on and internet browsing, brightest setting, BT enable for 30% of the time).

EDIT:
Took 20 seconds to show the desktop and another full 10 seconds to load Quicksilver and show all the icons on my desktop.

I have a MacBook Pro 1.83GHz and I have just ordered 2x1GB sticks from Amazon in the UK. They are really cheap at the moment but they have a delivery time of 4 - 6 weeks but it is worth it! Hopefully everything will run a lot faster and snappier (not that it isnt already). It will make a difference from 512MB!
