Hmm. You're right. I think they should make the dock at least completely/near complete transparent. I think they're focusing too much on 'fitting the colour scheme based on the background' thingy. This should only be applied to texts on the screen.

I agree. It would suit me just fine if the dock were completely transparent. A tiny hint of translucency would be okay, too. But as we've seen, the current heavy translucency can have some unintended consequences.

I submitted this as a bug report to Apple, along with my recommendation for either a transparent or nearly transparent dock.

This is actually a blur effect. It's like 50% transparent, 50% opaque. It doesn't quite accomplish what it sets out to do.

Couldn't agree more. I feel as though Apple is going against some of the things Apple has represented to so many of us for so long now. Apple has always been about providing context and familiarity with its products. When I use an Apple product, I know what to do. With iOS7 it feels as if they deliberately removed context...and I don't know why
FWIW, if you log into the iOS Dev Center, there's a section where they've put up the recorded videos of the WWDC sessions. There's an hour-long session that you can watch that explains the "whys" to most of the specifics behind the design changes, including context, and the efforts they went through to preserve familiarity.

I am well aware that some things in mobile UI you can't redesign or rework, but in Apple's case they made no effort to differentiate themselves from their competitors like they normally do. I'm not one of those people who are desperate for change then are angry when it happens, I was looking for things that no competition has done, so its worth spending so much money on an iphone when I could spend less on an android powered one.

If $$ is what matters to you then eventually you will switch to Android because Apple makes no attempts to hide the fact that it markets itself as 'premium'. It's easy to use and they have great customer service/Apple Care, which in itself is worth a lot money wise. Right from the very beginning they've shown that they're not just about the specs, and they're like that in the computer market as well.

I would've been disappointed if someone didn't take the time to create all-encompassing "iOS 7 is a disaster" complete with the "Wow." prefix, frankly.

iOS 7 is an exciting new beginning. The OS is alive again.

Yes...these inane threads of people incessantly complaining about "eye of the beholder" type stuff entertains me for hours...:D

It's so amateur though, you go from a glass panel dock to a blur. It looks photoshopped.

To me, those pictures really explain the difference. iOS6 looks elegant, classy, mature. iOS7 looks childish, simple, and new. I wouldn't say amatuerish, because both designs look quite professionally put together, just very different feelings went into them.

I think Apple could have reduced the skeuomorphism without going so fisher-price.

I am still confident that iOS will continue to be great. Whether it's iOS7.1, or iOS8, this new design will evolve. The bad bits will be toned down, the good bits will be highlighted.

Let's not forget, that OS9 users cried that OSX was too childish, too colorful, and too simple as well:

If you're adept enough to download the Beta AND install it to your iPhone, which I am going to safely assume you're not a dev. I do wonder how you cocked up something such a slide to unlock.

The fundamentals of iOS have not changed, slide to unlock, is oddly still sliding to the right to unlock.. Slide to power off, is still slide to power off AND it has a red strip where you slide! The shimmer in the text is still there.

Assume nothing. I am a developer and I am simply responding to the thread at hand. Wrong moves were made by Apple, and I'm stating my opinion on them. Nothing more. I was talking about context, not about the actual slide feature. They removed cues in the UI that informed you of how to use iOS that were present in all previous versions. The fact that this will make the OS even slightly more difficult to pick up for new users is a BAD move for Apple.

But keep on assuming.

Could you give me a link? I've logged into the dev center and looked at the videos but only see the WWDC2012 video sessions. Thanks in advance

To all those mentioning the dock... I think that's supposed to mimc frosted glass... Like elsewhere in the UI... If you look closely you'll notice.. I think something went wrong somewhere... Lol...

I found this link on Twitter. Wow such beautiful icons. This guy should work for Apple.

Yes, this is what it should look like.

This is exactly what I'm hoping it will look like when it get's out of beta.

He said this:

Giorgio Moroder said:
Almost a year ago, I took a day or two to redraw the iOS icons.

Since then, Apple's introduced iOS 7, with a visual style that is fascinating and new. The talented people at Apple have worked really hard to create something pretty cool for us.

Today, I revisited that original task and took about a day to understand the new style. Simpler, smoother, subtler. While I don't employ the grid they created (and while I instead use the colors I chose), these feel interesting and balanced. Vibrant and bold, but not overbearing.

These aren't necessarily a suggestion and certainly aren't a demand. I leave it in the very capable (collective) hands of those talented people at Apple to figure out what's best. But being who I am, an icon designer, I took it upon myself to do something on my own.

"Once you free your mind about a concept of harmony and music being correct, you can do whatever you want." – Giorgio Moroder

A real designer. (♥_♥) Hopefully they'll hire him.

This whole iOS 7 thing is in my opinion, is a change much like OS classic to OS X. It harnesses everything great about the operating system and 'revolutionises' it.

Personally, i love it. and there are many reasons why...

First of all, although this has been made, cartoony and simple. it has that essence of design and thought. I know at the first look it is like, BLIMEY! someones been smoking something when that idea sprung to mind... but it seems to work and work well.

I think another main reason this colour change has been made is that it can be made personal by simply changing the background image. this will the coincide with this so called iPhone 5s in multicolours.

But then there is all the features that were always there, but have been made that little bit better by taking out everything you don't need and simplifying it. as simple as removing the camera shutter has made the camera at least twice as fast with taking photos.

I love the new notification bar, it makes the old one look ancient, and the addition of the control centre just polishes off a nice bold new system.

I do agree that there are some things wrong with it though, i just hope these can be fixed. The thing i hate the most is the calendar. This is an app that i thought was simple enough to use, but they have made it better looking whilst stripping out its functionality. by having a simple dot on the calendar, it was easy to see that there was something happening, so id click it and a list would appear below. now i have to check individually and then scroll through the time of day. this is very unproductive and just a plain old... how can i put it, fail.

overall though, most people that will try iOS 7 will enjoy it. i like not having to have my brightness set high :p some battery savings there i tell u!

Too windows like...

I think Forstall's redesign of iOS would've been phenomenal, you know. He left because he didnt sign Apple's apology for Maps. But the things he was giving us at least tried to be on the cutting edge.

It was nothing like the doom we're seeing now. I think the whole idea of putting Jong Ive in charge of software design was just, (sigh) stupid.

I'll bet Forstall sitting somewhere smiling to himself, feeling a little vindicated for his panned 'skewmorphism', considering the criticism that iOS7 is receiving.

There are some redeeming qualities about it though.

We still have some detail here:

This looks cool. Tell me that's not Apple.

Look how nice and clean looking this is.

And it doesn't look that bad on a black iPhone.

Criticism from who?

The people on this forum who represent practically no one?
You'd be surprised. A lot of us are actual developers who might one day shape the world you live in by creating apps you might one day use.

Alot of us are from the jail breaking community and alot of us are... end users.

I see the thread starter has been banned...

Obvious troll is obvious perhaps??

Can't talk about it that much but hang in there. You'll be pleasantly surprised I think.

Also someone else made the comment about people complaining when we went from the platinum interface (Mac OS 8 and 9) to Aqua (Mac OS X). I remember it well. People are resistant to change.

When you use it I think it'll grow on you.

I think so.

Oh yeah, of course you know that iCloud.com is going to take on the new look from iOS7. So right now, we're in a weird limbo, transition period until Apple figures out what they're going to actually do.

We should be seeing some 7 elements in OSX too.

And smart developers will keep making apps for iOS because they're more likely to actually make money from it than the other platforms.
