WoW keeps freezing on my brand new 20" iMac (ATI HD 2600 PRO 256MB). No kernel panic it just freezes the the whole computer. The power button at the back is the only fix. I really hate having to do that. The most I get is 5 min until it freezes. Is there anyway to fix this? I'll have to go back to a win PC if this can't be fixed.

First off, are you watching the temperature your computer is running at when you play WoW?

On my old Yonah Macbook Pro, my computer would crash 3-4 times a day on WoW. It seemed to be much more recent though, as in, the later patches changed things that damaged WoW. It was a lot more manageable by keeping it cool, which you could do through various methods such as SMCfancontrol. After that, my computer would crash maybe once a day in WoW. There is a bug in the WoW game that would cause the crashes. The most recent one I am aware of is spell casts, which can be solved by turning the spell detail all the way down. That was patched.

From first glance, since your new, I'd think the iMac overheating.

The last time it froze, I had just woken the Mac up from an 8 hour sleep had no other programs running at the time and it still froze within 2 min. If its heat then this iMac was a bad choice.

My impression is that the heat problem with a laptop is not the same problem with an iMac but I would not rule it out. It only freezes when your playing WoW?

Do a google search on "imac freezes when playing wow". I came up with this.

TX Huntn, I' thought I'd give macrumors a try in figuring this one out. I did give google search a try , but the posts or threads seem to be a year or two old.

But, that thread you linked me to did have a guy on there that seems to have the same problem as me.

Quote
"I have been having the freezing problem after extended play as well.

I'm running os 10.5.3 on a 2.8 ghz Intel Core Duo with 4g ram

Video card is ATI,RadeonHD2600

The only application where I have experience this is wow.

It locks the whole computer. Sometimes, the sound continues. If running in windowed mode, I cannot click out of the wow application (most times the mouse is dead... recently I could get the mouse off of the window, but clicking on the desktop did not get the finder to allow force quit.)"

No one replied to him with a solution.
Could this be a Video card issue? Or, is my iMac a lemon?

Here might be a good place to discuss the problem. I'd post something in the Hardware forum. In the thread I linked, I saw some links to other places, but I did not look at them.

IMO you don't know enough yet to say you have a lemon. I'd also consider talking to Apple Support about the problem.

One of the good things about WOW is their Mac Support on their forums. A whole subforum for just us Apple users.

Bill....:apple:

Unless you are in Europe, then you don't get help at all...
Blizzard really need to shape up Mac Support in Europe!

Same Problem

TX, that work:) needed to lower it to 4x

Hey man I think I'm having the same problem. What exactly did you do when you said "lower it to 4x." I checked out the link but couldn't find anything directly related with this issue. Thanks in advance : )

They may be referring to texture filtering (its under the graphics settings). Also this new patch is causing a some player's Macs to freeze/crash, constant disconnects and some pretty severe overheating so some issues may not be fixed till they patch it.
