So,

I just upgraded my 15" PB G4 1.33Ghz with new RAM and new HDD. All I can say is, wow. I know it's a given, but it's working so much better and just feels like a new machine.

I guess I just needed to get that off my chest. For anyone sitting on the fence who is considering upgrading their machine, go for it. I went from a 60GB Toshiba 4200rpm drive to a Hitachi 100GB 5400rpm - the difference alone there was simply amazing. My goodness, are those 4200rpm drives slow!

I also upgraded the RAM from a miniscule 256MB to 1GB from Crucial. Word opens a 30 page document in 2 seconds. I am just astonished.

So, go on, upgrade your machine if you want to give it a new lease of life!

David

P.S. A big thank-you to those who helped me find a compatible HDD in an earlier thread! The MR communtity never ceases to amaze me.

Yup, RAM will do that.

I spent a week with 'only' 768MB in my PowerBook when my 1GB stick crapped out ... longest week of my life. Now I'm back up to 1.25GB and everything is good again.

I know what you are talking about. I had 768mb RAM in my iMac but then I replaced one of the 256 chips with a 512 and I couldn't believe the difference. RAM is definitely the best way to add performance.

Am happy you upgrade successfully. Upgrading a computer really is a wonderful thing -- not only do you get this mammoth performance increase, but you also get this almost celebratory feeling of accomplishment (something really tangible). Thanks for sharing your optimism and happiness -- I hope your PB keeps you this satisfied for years to come.

:)

Yeah, although I believe the RAM coupled with the much better HDD was what made such a massive difference.
