WoW Pet question/advice

This might be more of a question for a WoW forum, but you guys always give more intelligent answers...

I'm new to WoW, and everywhere I read that you generally want to keep with one pet so he can level with you. But since I am low level there are only a few pets available to me. How do I get a decent pet? Or do people generally change pets every 10 levels or so to keep up. I'm just confused concerning the best pet strategy.

I took a couple hunters to level cap in my WoW days and did a good amount of research on this topic. Here's what I've learned:

1. Various Pets have different damage, hp and armor modifiers (i.e. -9%, +5%, +8%)

2. When leveling: grab a pet that will serve as a good tank (I always took a bear really early on and stuck with it).

3. At level cap: Grab a high level pvp pet (i.e. Cat).

Pet choice used to make a substantial difference early on. However, as Blizzard has "normalized" the pets in many respects (i.e. attack speed) there aren't as many differences.

You can really do either. I personally dumped my first pet around level 18, and then switched again around 36ish(only leveled my hunter to 49).

Some friends have had the same pet from their 20's all the way to 70.

The main thing to realize is that it is very annoying to level a pet who is much lower than you(ie you're level 55 and the pet is 40).

Pretty much, if you see a pet you wanna try, snag him. Couple good websites out there for pet info too.

I took my cat from Ghostlands (tamed at lvl 10.. my first pet) all the way up until I hit lvl 70. He was a great pet to lvl with.

Cats make good pets if you are going to solo and go with a Beast Master talent spec. Boars are also great for soloing. Once you get to a higher level, Ravagers are good pets to have.

Basically try out different pets and keep the ones you like. Have fun... that's one of the better aspects of being a hunter.

Keep a free stable slot open so you can tame pets to learn their skills and then get rid of them once learned. If you have three pets, you won't be able to tame another until you abandon one.

Read through Petopia (link provided above) for stats on all of the pets available.

Boars for the win

I don't have one on my main, but I do have one on my alt Orc hunter and it's fantastic. I snuck into Redridge and tamed Bellygrub (who for his level has great skills) and it was totally worth the effort. They eat anything and Charge front loads so much threat, it's very hard to pull aggro off them.

Bears are more durable, but usually you kills things so fast as a hunter it really doesn't matter.

On my main, I still have the original cat I tamed back at level 10. Can't dare let her go, we've been through too much together.

Taming tip: use your freeze trap while taming.
