i got WoW for mac & i want to install it but, not play it yet

if i install it now can i download all the updates, without starting my free time?

reason being i will be going on hoilday soon so it would be stupid to start my free time now

Just a little advice before you purchase or start a new account. you should consider recruit a friend. This is a fast and friendly way for you to level your character from level 1-60 by getting triple xp when you level with a friend.

Been more like two years now. I quit WoW about a year ago and it was available long before I left.

You can't download the patches from Blizzard's in-client app until you sign up; the patching (or the detection of a patch) happens after you sign in. But I agree with others, just download the mirrored patches.

Totally wrong! When you start the Launcher it will already download and install updates.
Not after you login. You can't login from a client that is not of the same version as the server version.

Only updates to the launcher are patched at that time. Once the launcher is patched it runs and you have to log in. Then it checks for more updates, to the game, and then restarts if necessary.

Smaller patches are pushed out during launcher time as well; major patches are not.

If I understand what is being said, on a regular basis when a patch has been applied to the game, I have to log in with an account before the download of the patch begins. I think the OP is worried he'll be wasting is free play time downloading patches. Maybe it is different when first installing the game?
 
I'll recommend the common sense approach:

1. Install the program from your discs now.

2. When you get back from your holiday, sign up for your account and start to download the patches as soon as you arrive home.

3. Then, go shower, unpack, sort through your mail, sign up for home grocery delivery, send an email to your boss requesting that you be able to telecommute, prepare your will and pre-order a casket (ok, maybe you can save the casket for an extended maintenance morning). By the time all your real-life affairs are in order, the patches should have downloaded and you can play without fear of interruption.
 
Two easier approaches.

1) Download all patches from the given site above.
or
2) Don't bother installing at all, and just copy your friends version to your machine. (assuming he's already patched)

You forgot- "read the New World Encyclopedia front to back". :p

Hopefully the OP is not starting with an old disk version of the game, like from 2004. If that is so it would be better to go buy one of those $1.99 WoW demo disks to get a more up to date starting point.

This sounds like an outstanding idea. Or have them burn the game onto 3 or so DVDs and give it to you that way. Just keep in mind for copying, the game including expansions is about 17GB.
 
The easiest way to download the patches is to put anything in the sign in box. Literally do something like:

Username: asgjsrg
Password: easgjedg

Then it will start downloading a patch, and repeat until you have all the patches. Then after you have the final patch and do it again, it will say the details aren't valid.

You know, I never tried logging in with an invalid Username / Password. I was totally under the impression that they did this intentionally to prevent the people running private wow servers to be left out of updates.

Very interesting, I guess I could give this a shot considering that I don't have an account anymore. :D
 
Download WOW Matrix. It lets you download all add ons, and search for them. Then you search coordinates in WOW Matrix and read about them all. I think I used Cartographer.
 
well i created my account, early lol downloaded the patches and already on lvl 11

only took me 19 minutes to download all the patches :) 24.8MB FTW!
