So I haven't really used the 1TB from my i7 because I immediately transplanted in my OCZ Vertex SSD which, of course, is silent.

However, I just shoved the Seagate 1TB drive into an enclosure and am running it via Firewire 800. OMG! It has this awful droning sound. I'm copying a ton of stuff from a 2.5" USB drive to it right now and it's droning the whole time. The drone sound fades in... and out.... and in.... and out.

WTF is up with these drives? I'm seriously not excited about using it even as an external drive what with the racket it makes.:confused:

I have my FW800 drives under the table, so I really don't hear them. Can't you position yours a little further away and under/behind some obstruction to block the sound?

You did the right thing with your OCZ though. Wish Apple had already offered iMacs with 2 HD drives (one of which is an SSD). We'll get there....

Odd double standard here? Shouldn't this thread be titled

"SHUT UP about the droning HDDs already!"

Yesterday your opinions could be characterised as 'no screen is perfect', 'stop whining and live with it', 'all blown out of proportion' etc.

And then this thread appears complaining about a drive you said was silent only a day ago.

+1!!!

+1. Pot calling the Kettle.

Wha? How are the two even related? People are going crazy over the screen issues. How many of you have the internal drive OUTSIDE the iMac?

Right. Thought so.

Some of you must not get new computer monitors very often or you'd see how the lack of screen uniformity is pretty standard. Hard drive droning is not standard. See the difference? There are no kettles in this thread.

SHUT UP about the HDD noise already! You must not get new hard drives very often or you'd see that HDD's making noise is pretty standard. They're spinning faster than your cars engine, they make noise. Mine isn't making any more noise than any other HDD I've owned, so yours must be perfectly acceptable too.

When you know what someone wrote yesterday, you spend too much time on forums. Go outside, get some fresh air and do something useful with your life.

I'd be happy to agree with you, except you're missing something. As far as I'm aware, there's only ONE manufacturer of these 27" panels on the iMac. There are many alternatives for 1TB drives, however.

In any case, whatever. Arguing on the Internet, you know....

All sarcasm aside, I've owned 2 27" iMacs with the Seagate 1TB drives, and neither exhibited any more noise than any other drive I've owned. The noise output seemed very average, and I'm VERY sensitive to noise (see my posts about noise from the usb port to my studio monitors).

Reckon you must be making too much fuss about that HDD noise, in the same way that others are making too much fuss over their yellow screens.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I have also replaced my 1TB seagate with an SSD Intel X25-M 160gb, but I have not had droning issues with the stock drive before the swap. Is it just certain batches of the thing? I prefer Western Digital to Seagate though but I guess it doesn't matter now that I replaced it with an SSD. :D

Yup you're right. I just switched enclosure and the problem is gone. Must have been a resonance. :)

I think that both issues are equally important.
I mean all of the ones related to the screen and the ones related to the hard drives.

I normally go for Macs cause they are silent and they run OSX.
