I didn't buy this Mac Studio Ultra for gaming (honest!), but after installing Xcode & Android Studio, the next thing I installed was World of Warcraft. It's one of the few games that runs entirely natively on M1

People say 'yeah - a 15 year old game, that'll run on anything'. But the latest expansions have modern graphics, and in particular, Ardenwield in Shadowlands is notorious for taxing even the best graphics cards on Windows PCs.

It runs brilliantly on the Mac Studio Ultra with all the graphics settings on max apart from Compute Effects turned down to 'Good'. 60fps everywhere with V-Sync turned on; > 100fps everywhere with it turned off.

Good times!

38” ultrawide I assume? That’s great to hear since I’ll be playing on a 34” ultrawide at 3440x1440 whenever my 32c Max arrives. Thanks for sharing!

Not even that. It's an LG Ultra HD 27" one. Quite nice. "LG 27UD69P-W" is the model.

Good to hear, I’ll be replacing my ageing Mac Pro 5,1 with an RX580 with a new Mac Studio Max (with the upgraded gpu) paired to my 38” ultrawide and WoW is the only game I play on it. Sounds like it should be fine.

It plays pretty darned well on my Mac Studio Max as well. I'm playing on a 30" ACD @ 2560x1600. It doesn't do quite as well as my dedicated gaming rig, but with the settings set where you put them, it hits between 45-60 fps. Classic pegs at 100fps (even though the monitor is limited to 60hz). I'll still be playing most of the time on the PC, but it IS nice to not have to power it on to play it. I can just boot it on the mac and go to town!

With some little tuning in the settings tab you can go around 100fps or so, even for Dungeon or PVP and so on. From wow Forum: "Set render scale to 50% and enable fidelity super resolution in advanced options. it’s AMD equiv of DLSS and basically will render a clear image (not blurry or pixelated) at native resolution at half the render cost of doing so.

Also, don’t use MSAA, it’s expensive on M1 because apples hardware decoders for it are kinda bad. in fact they don’t even support 8x and 4x is expensive. use CMAA or 0 anti aliasing. bit since you are rendering at basically 4k anyways with fidelity super resolution, you won’t need more than CMAA or none anyways.

Last, turn compute effects off. they are expensive in therms of hardware. Absolutely not worth it to have enabled in any zone, they tank fps for no good reason."

Glad to hear these results. I play WoW on a 2019 PC which has a GTX 1070 graphics card, and at max settings I get 60fps on my 4K display (which is only a 60Hz refresh rate). The 1070 is an old card, so I'm glad to hear the Studio can easily (?) beat it. I would like to see some YouTube videos of gameplay - I haven't looked yet but I'm sure some will start turning up.

And yeah, turn all anti-aliasing off, you don't need it at such high res.

Take a look here (M1 Max on 16 MBP):

Same with Eve Online which is finally a native Mac app. Running on my Studio with everything set to the absolute highest level, it's sitting at 60fps (the max for the Studio display) and looks absolutely gorgeous. The Studio is barely ticking over, running at about 7% CPU.

I need a new computer bad and im desperate .. dunno if the base studio will be enough to play wow at 1440p
I'm playing on a base studio with a 30" ACD (2560x1600) and get decent framerates at ultra settings. If I knock it down just a little it'll run 60fps all day long. It doesn't run quite as well as my dedicated gaming PC, but pretty darned close.

So I picked up a base model and at 2k I can max it out .. just need to lower 2 settings from Ultra to High. No issues .. dead silent. I might actually order a custom one with 1tb ssd and 32 core gpu though. 512gb is very small and with all my programs and game installed i have 380gb left over.

I get over 100fps in most places in retail wow.
