WPA/WPA2 Personal on Lion

I have a D-Link 802.11n/g/b router and the wireless is set to WPA/WPA2 Personal with a 64 hex character key. These settings work properly on the Windows laptops in the house aswell as my Snow Leopard and Windows 7 Bootcamp partitions (yes my macbook pro is tri-booted at the moment)

In Lion, it doesn't let me enter in the entire key. If I paste it in, it grays out the "OK" button, but it's clickable when i delete a character, but of course it just times out since the key is invalid.

Is anyone else having similar problems with WPA/WPA2 Personal on Lion?

I don't have any problems with my WPA2 key. Any errors generated in the system log when they WiFi is trying to connect with that key? What happens when you change the key temporary to a simple word? Does it connect? What have you tried?

I've tried WPA Personal and WPA2 Personal, no errors are generated though since I can't tell it to "Join" since the button never activates.

In Snow Leopard it connects as WPA2 Personal

As for changing the key, I'd like to try and avoid it since my router is dumb and doesn't like manually set keys, not to mention the 3 other laptops that I'd need to change the keys on.

Not much troubleshooting you can do if you're not willing to enter a new key. How are you changing the keys normally?
 
You could either try actually TYPING in the key, or to migrate the settings of the Snow Leopard Partition via the Migration Assistant, that way Lion should have the WiFI Connection saved.

I set the bit-level of encryption and it generates one so then it is much more pseudo-random than anything i can make

Typing doesn't do anything different except giving me a cramp, I'll poke around for the wireless settings from SL

You should work in a PR department :eek:That makes no sense. "bit-level of encryption"? The WPA2 key is just a series of characters you type. Make it CAT to troubleshoot.

Have you considered filing a bug report? This sounds like a bug to me. Although one thing to check.. in the cop/paste do you have any extraneous characters at the start of the key? This could be your issue.

That's true on Apple gear. However, some 802.11 wireless gear uses hex keys and has options of generating the keys. And some use only hex keys.

I understand that but the OP is not doing " bit-level encryption" of any sort by providing a WPA2 key to access a wi-fi network. For the purposes of troubleshooting, keep things as simple as possible when trying to find the root cause of a problem. Suggesting he change the key is not a unreasonable troubleshooting suggestion.

Although the issue the person is posting about sounds like a key length issue:

So it sounds like a shorter key would work no problem. So the choice is file a bug report or use a shorter key or both.

64 hex characters at 4 bits per character = 256bit WPA2 Key encryption

copy and pasted from '$ cat key.txt' on my drive to get plain text to rule that out :p

Using a shorter key would be a workaround, I'm just trying to make sure this isn't a localized problem before I file a bug report, if I even can (I'm not a registered $99/year developer)

You win, migrated settings from my Snow Leopard partition and it works now, weird issue. Bug? yay or nay?
