For some reason I cant get write access to my external hard drive any longer (worked fine with my older mac). I have tried with two different hard drives (one new and one old) along with below actions but nothing gives me write access so I can easily transfer files from my macbook pro to the hdd. Read access is not a problem.

I have tried with succes (but not solving the problem with write-access):
  • formatted hdd to fat32 as well as macOS extended
  • I have given write access to the hdd for everyone from finder (via cmd + I)
I have a sagem router if that is of any importance. I have a 2019 macbook pro. when I drag the file to the external hdd I get a prompt to enter password or thumbprint (attached pic) when receiving that I do not have access (also attached pic).

Please anyone with experience of this or in any case thoughts how to solve the problem?

Are you connecting the drive directly to your machine or are you connecting through your router? If connecting through the router, check what happens when connected directly to your machine. I say this because I bought a new Netgear router recently and then found they'd removed the built in capability that existed in previous versions of the router firmware. The capabilities they removed had to do with usb drive and printer capability. The did provide kludgy software add ons for some of the removed functions. But I didn't want to use them because they we're so kludgy.

I think you need to turn off ownership for the external drives. Here are some links that explain the process:

I am connecting through the routers usb-port. When testing directly on the usb-port of the macbook pro it works fine. So you would say it is router settings that is causing this? I manage to read but its the write-part not working

Sorry, but I dont even have that option :/. I think you only get that option when the hdd is partitioned as a time-sharing thingy?

Yes, if it works for read and write when connected directly to your machine, but the problem only occurs when it's connected to the router's USB port, I would suspect something to do with the router.
You might want to check the Sagem support site.
But if it used to work when connected to the Sagem router but with an old that wasn't running Catalina, it might have to do with the new Catalina privacy and security settings.

Actually now when reading the pop-up more closely it says "The object can't be copied to xxxx due to you not having access to read". Is'nt that saying that it is a problem reading the object in my laptops folder (as supposed to writing to the external hdd)?
