Well this sucks... Girlfriend woke up today for work and her home screen on her 8+ seems to be semi-frozen making it completely useless :(
  • One app folder is greyed out
  • Can't access any apps on the home screen or swipe to go to spotlight search
  • Can feel the taptic engine working when pressing the home button, but can't double click to get to the multitasking window.
  • Can wake up screen with the sleep / wake button... but can't hold down button to power off
  • Can use up and down buttons... but can't use Volume down + Sleep / Wake to put phone into DFU mode
  • When plugging into computer, the "do you trust this computer" thing pops up on both the iPhone and Mac... press "trust" on iPhone, give it a few min, then press continue on Mac but only get error that the Mac is not trusted and cannot access information on the phone until it is
  • Can access control center and notification pull down
  • Can control volume, brightness, flashlight, wifi, bluetooth, apple TV, music pause, airplane mode from control center... but trying to launch calculator or camera does nothing
WTF Apple? First time I've ever had an issue where i couldn't turn off, iTunes restore, or at the very least DFU mode to get the iPhone back to normal. The only thing I could possibly think of doing is putting the brightness at 100% and keep the phone on for hours until it finally runs out of power and shuts off

She needs a phone for work so I had to sign out of iCloud on my 6s and give it to her so she could put her SIM card in and have a working phone

While I'm sure this doesn't happen often, this just affirms to me how Apple needs to calm the **** down on new iOS versions/features and instead focus completely on quality assurance w/ a lean OS that is free of bugs.

Wow, I'm an idiot... for some reason I thought the button combination to force restart, or begin DFU mode, was continuing to hold the Volume Down + Sleep/Wake button together until the apple logo appeared (which didn't work) like it was on iOS 10

Apparently on iOS 11 you now need to quickly press and release the volume up, quickly press and release the volume down, then hold the sleep / wake button until the Apple logo appears. Problem solved. You are awesome hugo. Thank you <3

Guess I get to play around with an 8+ for the rest of the day while my GF has my 6s until she comes home from work :p

It's not an iOS 11 thing, it's an iPhone 8/8+ and X thing.

Apple changed the method to force restart the iPhone 7, 8 and X. My girlfriend had the same problem as you on her iPhone 7 and I had to look on-line because I was used to an 5s. Glad to help Hal~9000.

The 7 has one way that's different from earlier models (mainly because of the haptic home button), while the 8 and the X have yet another way.

Some advice for later - maybe try to have a spare phone laying around, even if it's just a $100 Android from Amazon, or you could find a used iPhone 5 on iOS 9 or 10 that would be under $100, or a 5s maybe for slightly more. A flip phone for $30 on Amazon could even serve in a pinch.

We always keep a 2-3 year old spare iPhone around the house, so that if someone in the family breaks (or loses) an iPhone we can insert their SIM and sign them into iCloud to use it until the other issue is fixed, or their phone is replaced.

Right now that phone is a 5s on iOS 10.3.3 , so when the next family member needs it we can wipe it, and they can sign into iCloud or even restore a backup if they'd like. We have found the spare to be a lifesaver many times.

It's not worth selling the 5s when it can be such a big help around here. We also have a 4s on iOS 9.3 with a SIM adapter, and also a 6 on iOS 11 that's been repaired half a dozen times, but they could serve as our spare in a pinch although they run a bit slower than the 5s on 10.3.3.
