am i missing something? what happened to being able to set apps to open in separate spaces... it was like having unlimited screen real estate. is this gone in yosemite all of a sudden? why can't i find the settings for this?

Its under "Mission Control" in System Preferences and has been since Lion. Spaces and Expose was combined and in my opinion made much worse, however some people prefer it. Mavericks made it possible to have each monitor to be its own unique space, which was an improvement in some ways.
like say i want spotify to occupy the entire screen one one space so whenever i click it on the dock it just switches to that "screen" and i have my browser in another. this used to be easy.. is this gone?
i see the misson control pref pane but this doesnt have half the features i want with spaces. ie: set ____ app to automatically open in __ space. did they just ditch this actually useful feature?

You went from Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard straight to OS X 10.10 Yosemite? If so, look at the Dock icon of your application, right click on it and look under Options.
Until 2011, the year of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, it was standard since 2007.
Good luck with OS X 10.10 Yosemite, it is better than OS X 10.9 Mavericks in stability, which does not say much. OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, as bad as it sound still seems to be the stablest OS X version I have experienced.
And test TS for 15 or 16 days before you buy it.
I've worked with Stephen, the developer of "TotalSpaces", before it was acquired by BinaryAge ("TotalFinder"). There is a beta for ver. 2 that is available for use on 10.10, and it's quite literally exactly like "Spaces" pre-10.7 when Craig Federighi took over from Bertrand Serlet. You can fully customize it, place app's in any space, create gesture's and/or keyboard shortcuts, and works perfectly with multiple displays. That and "Control Center" from Cindori seem to make 10.10 much better, although I miss pre-10.7 OS X years.
