When checking to see if there is an update and if there is, it begins to download automatically and I have auto update OFF!! Apple is now ramming updates down our throats without clicking a “download and install” option anymore!! It will automatically download on your phone now . Only option now is to hit the “install now” option after it’s downloaded to your device and taking up precious disk space!

Auto update doesn’t prevent it from merely downloading when explicitly checking for updates....which is what you did.

It has never done this in the past , it had a “download and install option” I wanted to go into “about” tab and accidentally hit ”software update“

Yesterday I checked for updates and noticed iOS 13.3 was available. I noticed that I had to tap the "Download" link - the download did not automatically begin. I also have Auto Update turned off.

This didn't seem to be the case with my iPhone XR or iPad Air 3 yesterday.

My iOS 13 has been a complete nightmare on my iPhone and iPad from day one, it must be on my end then ....this whole iOS 13 only gets worst for me!

iOS 13 has been troublesome, that's true. I think Apple had a set of features that they wanted to release as quickly as possible and iOS 13 is a prime example of why software shouldn't be rushed out the door. I found iOS 12 to be much more stable and this whole thing is why I finally turned auto-update off.

I sympathize and I do hope things get better for you.

Thanks and I would give anything to go back to iOS 12 , I regret daily 10 times over to have updated to iOS 13. This has really changed my perspective on Apple and how poorly technically equipped their senior advisors are.

Let's hope Apple learned something from all of this and iOS 14 will end up being as nice as iOS 12. Fingers crossed! :)

As bad as 13 is I have never run into this. I have auto update on but have never had one download and install without my tapping on download and install. It then requires my device passcode before anything happens. Once “Preparing” finishes an “Install Now” button appears but nothing happens unless I tap it. I’ve waited about 15 or 20 minutes to see if it would automatically start but it never has. I don’t know what happens if I just leave it and then plug it in locked overnight. It may then start an automatic installation but I’ve always done it myself before then.

In the past, doesn't matter if I disabled autoupdate, it will always download the updates. But it doesn't auto install. The only way I prevented it is by jailbreaking.

If history repeats itself it just may , just not sure how you take something and break it. As far as I know improvements are made on a solid platform not destruction as Apple has done time and time again!

Must be a bug for some people but I have heard of people waking up and the new iOS had been installed overnight.

That’s not a good thing needing to jailbreak to prevent such a thing. Jailbreak days are over for the majority of people.

same here.

i have never allowed automatic updates. and even now, as you also mention, its clearly set as not allowing automatic update (Automatic Update is set in the off position).

behavior before: with Automatic Updates set to off, merely going to Settings/Genera/Software Update only automatically checked to see if an update was available. if one was, then it just indicated an update was available and you needed to overtly start the download.

new behavior: even with Automatic Updates set to off, merely going to Settings/General/Software Update will trigger an available download to be actually start to be downloaded.

in either case, however, to actually install an update once downloaded, does still require you to overtly click yes to install it (if you have Automatic Updates set to off).

so, the meaning of "Automatic Updates" as most people understood it to be has changed. now it just means that new updates won't be installed automatically rather than won't be downloaded and installed automatically.

i hope apple in this latest implementation has a good algorithm to handle downloads that stop and start during downloads that have once begun and can force a once stopped download to finish the process.
that's why i usually waited until i knew i had time to actually do a complete download all at once.

i also think its probable that the above new behavior is affected by whether or not its connected to Wi-Fi or not.
in my case above, it was connected to Wi-Fi and connected to power.
i cant imagine if only connected to cellular it would start a 1GB download automatically.
you can control this kind of thing in the case of apps (download only on cellular etc) but not apparently for an update to the iOS itself.
so maybe if connected only to cellular it doesn't download it automatically?
same with power connected or not: it would be seriously odd if it allows updates to its operating system to begin downloading while not connected to power.

Right and this unacceptable, I don’t want a software sitting on my phone waiting to be installed and taking up valuable disk space on my phone. The major bugs that Apple has had I wouldn’t put it past them that it installs on its own when plugged in overnight. I have lost complete confidence with Apple , they are not the same company I signed up to and trusted since 2007!

Mine is the other way. I have it on but it takes forever until it finally decides to do it when available. I will see it when out of WiFi and not be able to download, but then I will forget when I get home. But if I am home all night, you would think it would at the least download it, so if I see it again outside of WiFi, I can install it. It usually takes a few days before it finally shows it will attempt to update overnight.

iOS 13 is a total mess, I really don’t know how Apple breaks something so badly when it worked so well. They need to start spending that trillion dollars on real engineers and not stash all that money oversea!!

Looks like I’m going to stay on 12. I can’t believe they haven’t got it right yet.
