I noticed the new update brings background streams for some stations, apparently.
Anybody know what those stations are?? because none of mine play in the background so far...or so I think

When you go to load a station in WunderRadio, look for the blue status box in the middle of the app interface (the box that shows the status of buffering). When the app is buffering a station, if the station stream has the capability of streaming outside of WunderRadio, you'll see three small text options, Help, play in background, and Change bit rate. If the stream doesn't work playing in the background, then you'll only see Help and Change bit rate in that status box.

When you click, play in background, it launches Mobile Safari with the stream. However, it allows you to use another app, BUT NOT Mobile Safari. That window has to be open as the front window of Mobile Safari.....doesn't look like you can open another Mobile Safari window to browse another site.

At least that's the way it appears to be working for me. Hope the description isn't too confusing.

Thats great that a developer has figured it out how to get something to play in the background.
They accomplished a feat with that.
Now if only pandora could figure it out.

More like use a loophole.

Yeah, but....it's unique thinking.

While I use WunderRadio and frequently use their built in browser, this is a way to listen to a radio station and use a book reader for example. Nice!

Would anyone that has the app be willing to see if ESPN Radio will play in the backround? I listen to it at work and would love the backround function! Don't want to pay $6.99 just to find out it doesn't. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I'm not an ESPN radio listener.....that being said:

In the general search field of stations, WunderRadio pulled up 53 specific ESPN related stations, all looking to be AM stations. There were also 3 search 'categories' that also matched up ESPN channels. One category was more channels, specific FM stations to nationwide cities and/or the official ESPN channel. One category option looked to be searching for Spanish ESPN channels. Last category even showed the current or in progress 'shows' you could listen to.

All sorts of bit rates from 28k to 128k streams. I didn't click every one, but a few that I clicked gave the 'play in background' option.

Lastly I searched in my local area by GPS (Dallas Fort Worth), as I didn't see it listed. So, ESPN Radio 103.3 channel KESN-HD3 came up as a 128k stream. Also had the 'play in background' option. Played fine (as a background channel).

Hope that helps.

I tried it this afternoon with the ESPN affiliate in DC. They use the same streaming player that ESPN National radio uses (their stream comes through their servers), and it did allow for background streaming- worked fairly well.

ooTunes had this feature from day of release (albeit for $20 server cost) as did FlyCast (free, but with limited station choice). The catch as has been pointed out is that you can't use Mobile Safari for anything else.

PocketTunes also came out with its own web browser within the app (which eventually added landscape and bookmark capability...still not as featured as Safari - ex. no tabs - but reasonable enough to use).

Now I have Backgrounder on the 3GS which can't be beat. :) We've come a long way from this time last year re. streaming radio!

ESPN 1000 AM WMVP in Chicago works just fine in the background as well.

How?

ESPN 1000 AM WMVP in Chicago works just fine in the background as well.

I just got the app and this station doesn't come up in a search. It's the only one that I need that is missing. Did you have to put in a custom url? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Tom

I couldn't find it either. Searched WR all sorts of ways. This station is on the radiotime.com website's listing. Might want to send WR an email. Worked for me before.

Does this work with Sirius stations?

No. Sirius has their own app. Internet listening in high quality requires subscription. Unless you listen to the shock idiots on s
Sirius, or maybe NASCAR, most of the other content can be had via WunderRadio, Slacker, Pandora, or maybe some of the other free players.

I know Sirius has their own app... it doesn't allow for background streaming. I was just wondering if Wunder radio app allows Sirius to be streamed in the background.

@Tunnelrunner: I just got the app as well and ESPN 1000 AM WMVP doesn't come up in a search. Are you still able to listen to this station? Did you have to put in a custom url? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.
