I am inclined to agree that this will fall far short of our wildest dreams. I don't think we will see iPads apps being able to access more than 5 GB of RAM - that extra RAM is just to allow apps to stay in memory rather than being quit and reloaded.

I think there will be modest changes to things. I don't think we will see the extended "desktop" support we want or the enhanced "Finder" for iPad" that some want.

That said, I wouldn't be that surprised if they released a Final Cut (rather than Final Cut Pro) for iPad.

Fueled by assumption, heading into this. Not a good strategy. So i'm not expecting much, just the usual evolutionary update, and maybe some hardware goodies.

Who knows.

Apple will likely NEVER expose the file system in iPad, because the goal of an iPad/iPhone is to be something that "just works" and that people don't have to worry about.

If you expose the underlying file system to the user, you also expose it to the malicious actors, meaning that now you have to worry about security, malware, etc. The goal of the iPad has ALWAYS been a device that anyone can learn how to use in 20 minutes, and therefore is geared to a less "techie" crowd.

Someone else put it this way -- You once had to be a mechanic to drive a car, now that is no longer the case. You once had to "know" tech to use a computer, and the iPad (and iOS) eliminated that. You are going to tick off the market if you take that away, because so many bought iPad with that in mind (or, like me, recommended it to less techie family members so they would stop calling me every 5 minutes for computer help).

I'm not asking for that.

But a "Finder" that had a copy dialogue? Phew, I think I'd faint. Or that could multitask in a meaningful way - like copying multiple files at the same time.

I think the evolution of iPadOS will take more than one version. 15, 16,17 etc,

Really shocked we have had to wait an entire year to move a widget from the left side of the screen to anywhere on the homescreen. When we got iOS last year I was stunned this wasn’t even a feature and figured it would be fixed in a software update. pretty sad when you think about it. A whole year to move a widget.

They had to save something exciting for the next big release ...

I agree.

There's a common thread amongst reviewers that is, IMHO, nothing new. The whole "so powerful, but limited by software" schtick. That has been true for several generations of iPad. With the exception of more RAM and Thunderbolt; this is the same story.

Apple clearly has a vision for this product. Apple engineers probably figure that if you want anything more than what iPad OS has to offer, then that's what macOS is for.

We're not going to see a radically new iPad OS at this or any WWDC. We'll see incremental improvements that will make it better over time; but it's never going to be a genuine desktop-replacement OS.

Remember when they dog and pony showed off Photoshop and how powerful it would be for iPad? And then Adobe took a friggin year to actually release it.

Like this. A lot of promises, but it will be time to buy next year's iPad by the time we see it.

Oh yeah, I agree that would be nice. I'd like to see improvements to the Files app myself, like progress bars for copies, etc. I just don't think it will ever be as "powerful" as the finder app.

I think the more RAM is for app developers. What I CAN see in the future is developers being able to make apps that work well either with touch or a mouse/keyboard so that they can easily make an app available on all platforms. MacOS doesn't use 16GB of RAM (and if it did, I think we'd all be pissed) but some apps absolutely do. A unified app store across all platforms would allow for more app parity across devices with less development time needed (which is something that would be awesome, IMO).

If they do that, and developers take advantage of it, the iPad could be a laptop replacement for even more people than it already is today.

Hoping they allow us more folders on one screen, I still think there's far to much space not used up

Looks even more so on a 12.9

Well, not disappointing in one way - every device carries over from iPadOS 14, even the Air 2 and mini 4. That's downright impressive support!
