So while I was on the toilet, usually the one place where all my innovation happens, I started thinking about the WWDC and what hardware would come out of it.
Yes I realize there are lots of threads talking about WWDC, but Ive yet to hear anyone think of the rumor Im about to purpose.
Now we all remember the G4 Cube correct? Personally I thought it looked ugly, but lots of Mac fans loved it. It wasnt successful however, and it quickly went EOL (end of life).
Now today we have the Mac Mini, which I think is great, but is lacking a bit. For one thing it needs more storage capacity. It needs to use standard 3.5 inch hard drives. Its been around for a while now, and while successful I think Apple makes a lot more money from the notebooks then the desktop line.
Now heres where my idea comes in, the Mac comes back, along with the Mac Pro.
The Mac Pro will be the full blown model with Intel Xeons aka Woodcrest chips inside.
The Mac, the brand that got started in 1984, will come back with a vengeance. It will be release with the new Core 2 Duo chips, in a mATX chassis. So it wont be the size of a full tower, and it wont be the size of a Mini, it will be half way in between.
Now why would someone want such a thing? Well first off you can make a platform that is upgradeable. In a mATX chassis you have 3 expansion slots usually. So Apple can sell this thing with onboard video and the brave ones can upgrade the video card to whatever they see fit.
Now you have to ask yourself, wouldnt this cannibalize sales of the Mac Pro?
Honestly, I dont think it will since some people need to have all those open slots on a motherboard, some people need to have the capability to use more than one video card, some people want to have dual dual core chips, some people want to have dual quad core chips when they come out in the first half of 2007.
The rest of us however can live with a smaller Mac tower that only has a PCI Express slot and one or two open PCI slots.
I love how the Mac Mini looks but I dont want to buy one due to the storage factor.
One more thing, about those iMacs, thats where I cant think of what to say. I mean theyre great systems for those that want an all in one, but I personally dont like how they look. I used to own an Intel iMac and it just didnt look right on my desk. Heres hoping they go brushed aluminum one of these years, Ive had enough with this white Plexiglas nonsense!
So anyway, what do you guys think? Am I mad or is this plausible?
