No. Some products are prone to mistakes... but name me 1 electronical item youve bought that hasnt had something wrong with it.
I can name a few, but things like computers, all my Macs havent cause me hassel. except the powerbook, needed a new keyboard, and the backlight has failed on a few keys, and apple never replaced that... bah
Macbook/pros had problems when they had Core Duo in them. Core 2 Duo is a lot better.

Everything has defects, if there is ever a Delldefects.com the site will probably have more user accounts and listed defects than Wikipedia has articles

No. But the people who do have problems always shout the loudest.
I've bought three Macs now...
Mac Mini G4 1.42 - No problems for me. Some people reported issues with image brightness on CRT displays using the DVI->VGA adaptor (but it worked fine on my display). Others reported issues with some DVI LCD displays.
Mac Pro 3GHz - Rock solid. Some people have reported bluetooth and/or Airport reception problems. My Airport works great BTW. Have not had a chance to try the bluetooth.
MacBook - Works just fine. This is the new Core 2 Duo version, so previous reports of staining, overheating etc appear to have been worked out (or are just not that common). While it is not silent (not to my ears), it is quieter than my Mac Min - which was very quiet. Ambiet sound (cars outside - central heating - people whispering downstairs) usually drowns out HD/Fan/whatever is making any noise. Heavy video work will push the tempreature up so that the fans will come on for a minute or too sometimes. Normal usage temp sits around 60. Drops to 40 if idle or just playing an audio book through iTunes.
I'm sure there are some bad units out there. But to date I (and my friends who have bought Apple after playing with my Macs) have yet to encounter one.

Some have a very specific problem like a component failure which gets sorted and then reliable thereafter.
But there is a not insignificant number of people that experience issues that have not necessarily been easy to pin down until there has been sufficient quantity of feedback and these tend to clog up blogs and chat rooms etc.
I do believe that Apple use really good components. I do believe that the designs get well tested (although we know they verge on the daring).
I am a bit worried at the quality control! Obviously sales are ramping up putting pressure on production. I am also concerned at the variable quality of some Apple support staff - (phone & store), again perhaps not unrelated to rapid expansion.
As with any manufacturer, if the quantity of returns/repairs began to be more than a smallish percentage - and costing them - they would quickly bring it under control.
Overall: some growing pains, basically sound reliability, and a joy to use!

The CPU whine doesn't seem to be fixed with the C2D MacBook. My C2D MacBook has it, even after a logic board exchange. Also, if I use the CPU, it gets so hot that it underclocks itself. Another funny thing, after I got it back from service, it's missing the two screws that are next to the superdrive.
People generally don't yell about how great a computer works and if they do, you walk away from them slowly, right?
There isn't anything that's perfect whether it's food, memory, electronics, cars, appliances, etc. Apple tends to polarise people. Very few people are in the middle not caring about Apple's computers.
Apple has had some bad quality in certain timeframes but things seem better now. If you're really worried, buy a refurbished unit.

Apple-owing folk tend to complain a lot more than others about defects. They have a beiief (rightly or wrongly) that Apple products are vastly superior to other (WinTel) manufacturers. Having said that, my MacBook C2D is the best laptop I have ever had, by far (HPs, Compaqs, Dells, Toshibas). Superior quality, no "whine", excellent fit and finish and all for maybe 10% more than a WinTel of the same spec.
Well, I have the supposedly problem prone Rev A Macbook, and it hasn't caused me any headaches at all
Always bear in mind that those who have problems will always be the loudest. Those who have perfect MBs/MBPs/MP//Minis/iMacs/etc will rarely come on a forum to say "Well mines fine".

Okay Apple products are not perfect, as everyone said, none are. But this site is being a bit too much on the critical side of things. the article about ipods causing muscle strains is purely hilarious, and the whole shocks through headphone story is also quite a laugh since THEY blame it only on ipod headphones, while the original article blames it on headphones in general.
The MB and MBP had issues, but I think they have all been fixed. So to the OP, I really would not worry too much.

I'm using a three year old iBook that runs beautifully, everything working extactly as it should do save an ailing battery... Which I think is pretty good going compared to most of the wintel computers i've used.
my mbp is perfect, and i wouldnt even think of going with anything other than apple from now on. everything is ten times better on my mbp than it ever was on my dell laptop.
