I'm trying to open an X11 application.
It yells at me that I need X11.
So, I go into apps>utilities>x11 and I open it.
It blinks onto my dock for about 3 seconds, then fades out, like it was quit.
I've done this several times, and X11 just won't open!

I've tried restarting, downloading X11 from Apple, yada yada yada, but it won't work!

Can y'all help?

I don't know what could be wrong, but try this: open Terminal, write
/Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11
and hit enter. What happens? Does it open? If not, does it give you some feedback on the console?

Same thing happened to me. I deleted it from the Utilities folder and reinstalled from the Mac OS X installer CD. I'm using Tiger; I'm not sure if it's on the Panther CD as well, if that's what you're using. I think the version on Apple's website is way out of date, so try reinstalling from your CD if possible.

open up the console appl in the utility folder then open x11.

you should see something like this and perhaps an error message:

Code:
XFree86 Version 4.3.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
[DRI] screen 0 installation complete
Screen 0 added: 2176x864 @ (0,0)

Yes -- this same thing happened to me when I upgraded to Tiger. I'm totally unclear why they would have such an old version on their website. Use the one from the Tiger dvd, or even the one from the panther CD and you should be good to go.

As far as I know, the only version of X11 that will work with Tiger is the one on the install disc...

I'm going to do this.. I kept trying to open it, but it gave me the "image not found" schpeel, even though it was there, and I was (trying to) open it by clicking on the fscking icon! *anger*
