X1900XT drivers?

Hi! I'm new to the forum.

I just got my Mac Pro with the X1900XT and as soon as I fired it up, I ran software update, updated all my apps and my firmware, etc, and it's been great. However, I thought I'd check ATI.com to see if there were updated drivers. There is an ATI updater thing that one can download; it isn't card specific. It didn't list the x1900 as being supported specifically, but it said it worked with all ATI OEM cards in Apple computers. So I downloaded and ran it, but the ATI preference pane in System Prefs won't open. Ever since, my video performance has been a bit slower. Unfortunately, I haven't yet installed Windows so I don't have any 3D benchmarks of which to speak, but I have noticed that little things, like the Genie Effect, and opening Dashboard don't go as smoothly as they did before i updated. Basically, my video performance is just mildly choppy. It's not a big deal-- yet-- but I just wanted to throw it out there and see if anyone had had a similar thing happen.

If it is in fact these updated drivers, is there a way to revert to the ones that were on it when it was new? And if so, can I do it without losing any data or reinstalling?

Are you talking about the December 05 update or the January 05 update for your brand new Mac Pro?

Yea, I think you messed something up. These drivers, historically, have been for aftermarket retail cards, not OEM cards that ship with Apple products (and certainly not past 2005).

Unfortunately I don't know anyway to roll back a driver update, ala Windows "rollback driver" button. Sorry.

yea you're screwed. There is as tool you could use to fix it but it works in os9 only, its a ati flash tool. you'll either have to take it to an apple store and say help me help me help me. Or load windows get a rom flasher and search the web for the EFI drivers someone extracted from the card (i know someone has done it and still has the document)

Are you saying he inadvertently flashed his card? I don’t think that’s what happened at all. I think he just has a messed up driver on his system now.

I wonder if a software update would contain drivers. Worst case maybe someone on here with a system of the same specs could send him the kext files.

oh i thought he installed the ROM update from early 2005 which is a bios update. lol, my bad.

would someone take a snapshot (old fashioned style, shift-propellor-4!) of the graphics tab of his system profiler graphics tab and put it up so I can compare it to mine?

only thing close to that i see is displays, appearance, and desktop/screensaver

Never Update the Video Driver?

I have a question related to this as I have the same vcard. I am having trouble a Spyder 2PRo Monitor Calibrator that I got for xmas and the guy asked me if I updated my video card to the latest driver. I am running 10.4.8 on a 1.67 G4 PB and I have never updated my video drivers nor have I ever heard of anyone else doing so. Is this then not advisable?


BTW, I am thinking of upgrading my HD though to a 120g and wonder if it is worth it to upgrade the video card as well. Iam going to be editing a lot of video in the near future...
