X3 Reunion - ARGH !

I've recently installed this game with the latest updates from the 'Virtual Programming' ( the guys that have 'produced' mac version ) and its starting to drive me mad !

The game is visually stunning running it on new mac pro with hi-res screen but there is a major problem. It keeps crashing. Now normaly thats a pain in the arse but given that this game is a slow evolving reality that you spend months building your empire and trading etc etc it doesn't help that almost every hours it shuts down, but worse: It then re-sets itself demanding registration codes - which when you enter It then refuses to accept. The only support I've managed to get from 'VP' has been to delete a 'Cider' folder in preferences. This allows you to use your legit registration code and lets you back into the program but then starts you back to scratch with no saved games !

Support can only come from 'Virtual Programming' as 'Egosoft' ( the games designers and support for PC ) are hands off for Mac issues. 'VP' have taken five days and counting to answer simple questions.

Anyone else here got this game running ? any secrets ? - short of demanding money back for the purchase ?
 
Hmm this might be just a single case problem. I mean there are tons of files that can conflict with games always. Alot of games on ppc macs don't work if divx network drivers are still in the library folder... another thing that might prevent the game from crashing is trying to set the games memory use higher... You used to be able to change the amount of mem. used by an app but i haven't had the need to do that in years so i don't know if it's still possible with the new systems and all...
 
New Patch

There are TWO patches since the original was released - the site says to install them in sequences. This patches are on the VPLTD site - I could not find them else where. One specifically mentions crashes in station

I just got game last week and have logged a few (WAY TOO MANY) hours this weekend! Guess who is taking Wife out to nce dinner to get neglect forgiveness.

Not a single crash. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

As it turns out the problem was that my mac Pro hadn't had any updates so whilst it had the latest OS it didn't have the other updates

All good now tho !
 
Hi people,

I'm a windows convert! Just got my new imac 24" and wanted a strategy game that wasn't Sims or Civ.IV type of games.

I've just ordered X3 and wondered how you guys like it?

My imac is the 2.8ghz, 256mb HD2600 and 4GB ram version... so hope there'll be no issues running at full res etc.

I like it. It is REALLY hard at first because they don't explain how to do ANYTHING. I am no that far along but they say when you beat a few missions it opens up and really gets interesting. But all reviews I've been able to read say they enjoyed it.
 
Single Player Time Suck

This game is great albiet it is one you will either LOVE or HATE. Depends on the individual preferences. Me I love it.

I've got it running on a new Mac PRO/8800GT card - graphics full everything - MAKE sure you download the TWO patches from vpltd.com and install them IN ORDER. I have had one crash in MANY MANY hours of play...but if you do not install... be warned.

TO start with, this game is BEAUTIFUL - get out of your ship once and a while and just look/float around around space. If you have a megalomaniac side to accumulate wealth and power it is awesome. It can be slow at points but if you ever had to do business travel it is like that hurry up and wait. I chose to start at the lowest level with basically a used car and go from there... there are other options... the fact that the universe is 'alive' and other are competing for your killer trades means you have to be on top of things. I imagine WOW is like this two but X3 is free.

The new interface over X2 is WAY improved but there is a learning curve... what new vehicle does not have that? The level of control is what you make it from a few main keys to very detailed flight formations for your wing men and fighter craft protecting your freighters in far off sectors etc...

Controlling a fleet and making money all the while finding fights to take on... love it - like the secret fantasy to be Han Solo managing his smuggling operations.. ahahah... hey I was only 7 when I had that dream...once I got older and learned about girls had to give up on that goal. ;-)

PS - don;t waitst your time... your girlfriend/wife/sig other will not be impressed when you make your first million or buy your first space station factory... (I cut my wife out of the will) hahahh

I prefer games that take ages, I had a star wars strategy game on the pc years ago (EDIT: Star Wars Supremacy! I remembered!) i forget the name, you had to conquer planets and build ships etc. was great:)

I have an Xbox 360 now and hate buying games i can complete in half a day.
 
hey.
got x3 2 days ago and installed on my computer. played for a little while, but then it quit on me.:mad:
installed both patches, and still having problems, along with having to keep re registering and throwing away the preferences.
any help is much appreciated.
i have a 2 GHz, 2 GB RAM iMac
 
Can someone tell me exactly how you apply the patches? I download them, click on them and try to apply it to the game file but it keeps saying "you can't install the patch to this file"

I downloaded the game from deliver2mac.

X3 patch

I downloaded from deliver2mac as well and had the same problem. I persisted and hunted around and finally found a more recent patch which made the game work okay. If you go to the PC sites and forums - there are lots of them for this game, you will find plenty of tips and cheats and mods. It seems that this particular game works best on a PC in that the user can adapt and modify the game to suit his/her personal quirks. I don't think you can do this on the Mac version. Anybody?
 
Unknown object

I was checking out the further reaches of the game universe last night and came through the West Gate into Montalaar from the Unknown Sector when something showed up on my scanners, marked as Unknown Object. I went to investigate and it went back through the gate into The Unknown Sector. I followed but being in a Buster, did not have the speed to catch it. It looked like a classic Hollywood flying Saucer, and appeared to rotate on it's central axis.
Anyone know what this is? I have not modified the game in any way apart from applying a recent patch to enable it function in the first place.

I have been checking forums put up by PC users of this game and it seems those of us who use a Mac have been badly shortchanged when it comes to add ons and mods etc, but it is still a very interesting way to spend a few late night hours.

Nobody out there , it seems. So - for what it's worth - if you go to http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=208542 you will find some info on how to access a modified version/ add-on for this game. Let me know how you get on. Toodleloo.
 
Okay, I have the same problem as the OP.

When I first installed the game I registered normally and then this popped up:

"Server Error

There was a problem connecting the registration server. The key appears valid, you will be able to play the game anyway."

I played for a second, saved the game. Went back to play and I was asked to register again. It then rejects my code as invalid.

I then deleted the cider folder that the OP mentioned and was able to play again but my saves were lost (like the OP said).

What the heck is going on?!?!

I updated my software like the OP said too but that hasn't helped.
 
Found the little beggar !

Same problem, v disappointed.

So, a little looking around and found the following worked for me.

Definition : PREFS = [your home]/Documents/Preferences/Cider X3 Preferences (sorry, old programmers never die)

1. First time you get a game to start after registering, quit out of it & save the directory PREFS to somewhere.

2. After the game crashes, copy file rocket.ddg from where you saved in step 1 back into PREFS -> bingo, game starts again OK

Alternatively, your save games are in PREFS/p_drive/My Documents/Egosoft/X3 - you can save these out of PREFS somewhere, replace PREFS with your original saved copy, then copy the save games back in.

If you change a lot of preferences in between times, you'll lose these changes as well.

This is heinous....

Ok guys, here is my problem. I did what the OP said to do, which was delete the whole preferences file. I did that, and no luck whats-so-ever. I keep getting the "This Product Code is Invalid" thing. I have the product code right on the CD sleeve. Hopefully VP will get back to me very quickly, but from what the OP said, I don't hold out much hope. Any suggestions guys?
