If someone wanted to go for $2299 iMac only because of Radeon Pro 580 for gaming,
now for the same price you could get the $1799 iMac + $499Xbox One X

Xbox GPU is 6 TFLOPS 12GB 326GB/S vs iMac 5.5 TFLOPS 8GB 217GB/S

Doses MS office count as "gaming"?
You can choose Clippy as your avatar for several games.

Xbox One X can play games better than iMac.
iMac can develop games much better than the Xbox One X.

;).

To sell $60-$150 games?
To anger moms & wives everywhere?
The non-limited edition games are typically 50 bucks and I'm amazed at the complexity and depth. I love playing Fallout 4 and Skyrim. Definitely worth the 50 or so bucks. I'm not into the limited editions that are priced higher but if people enjoy them - more power to them.

I myself play ~3 games either alone or with the kiddo, and I also have no interest in limited edition packages. I'm well past that point in my life.

I am holding off judgement until the units ship. 1080p at 60fps should have been a breeze when the Xbox One released, yet both were not matched most of the time. I hope they learned their lesson and it is actually what they say. But even my GTX 1080 struggles at 4K at 60fps. Optimization is the key here though, so we will see.

Anyway, when will people understand that Macs are NOT gaming systems? What is this obsession to get Macs to play games? I don't get a Dell workstation with Quadro video cards to play games, because Quadros suck at playing games.

How well does the Xbox run Vmware, or MS office

Sure, but the point is that the RP 570/2GB in the cheapest 27" iMac runs VMware and MS Office just as well as the top end RP 580/8GB - many people are paying that premium so that they can play games when they've finished (or trying to put off) using VMware and MS Office. For those people, a cheaper iMac + Xbox is worth considering. If only the iMac had an aux HDMI input... (probably technically difficult).

The original post was quite clear about the "if".

Not true. There are more things video cards can do than just play games. Better GPU means better FCPX. Or if you are in VR development, a better GPU will be better too. It is not just all about Games people. A GPU does a lot more these days.

It doesn't but the iMac is built as a generalized product able to do many things very well, where as game consoles are designed and built for a single purpose.

The TS is trying to make a point if you are in the market for a new iMac and you also want to game it might be just better to get a lower end iMac and then used the saved money to purchase an Xbox. The TS is not indicating that one shouldn't purchase a iMac, just that you might want to consider the alternative that you could probably fund the purchase of a dedicated gaming console by not getting the top iMac model. There is obviously more considerations to this such as desktop gaming vs console but it's just a general idea for one to consider.

It really all depends on the person. I'd buy a higher end iMac for gaming because I do a lot of photo and video editing for fun and it would be an added benefit to have the upgrade

Wrong thread section.

... although to be technically accurate, you would still need a display for the Xbox which might be added to the cost and the space where you work.

If only the iMac had a video input so you could use the same screen!

from my perspective, its nice that the imac is so close to it, since the new xbox is suppose allow to play at native 4k 60fps games

As others have said- two entirely different products for entirely different demographics and purposes.

Be happy we get a 5.5TFLOP chip in a mainstream mac desktop, guys. My 2013 mac pro is only 4.4!!!

What about the route of $1799 iMac + dGPU via Thunderbolt Enclosure?

I was very excited for that as well, but it seems (at least for the moment), internal acceleration isn't supported. I wouldn't buy an iMac with the intention using an eGPU to run the internal display until we hear more.
