For me its fine because im on a MacBook Pro 2014

But has anyone on an older iMac 2011-2012 see any optimization? My other colleagues are a bit nervous to update Xcode and have it crawl.

Xcode 8 to Xcode 9 saw a significant decrease in performance on older Macs.

By Apple decision, you are going to have to upgrade your apps to run on iOS 12 by March 2019, and for that you need Xcode 10.

Xcode 10 runs only in High Sierra or Mojave.
