Man I wish Xiaomi would just start selling in the US already. Very nice phones.
I am gonna get this the day it is released in Singapore. If the price is the same as it is in China, then the 128GB version is less than half the price of the 6S plus
Doubtful this exact phone is coming State side anytime soon, sounds like they eventually plan too, and will "someday soon" but his remarks make it sound 2nd half of 2016 best case, and most likely in 2017.
Makes me think the OnePlus Three will basically be a very similar spec'd phone, at a very good price point, once it's released in May.
Design is similar to Note 5 and S7. I'd give it a try at the lower currency conversion price and since it has some Google influence with Hugo Barra on board but any higher I'll just go with original Samsung.

Never going to happen as long as they continue to clone Samsung or Apple. There is a reason Xiaomi doesn't sell (legitametly) in Europe, North America or Oceana. They can't afford the lawsuits. Not a problem as long as they stay in places like India, China and Vietnam.

I really, really like it. I thought the Mi 4 series were ho-hum. The Mi 5 is the most worthy Xiaomi flagship since their Mi 3. The design, specs, and price are all excellent. But Xiaomi doesn't seem to care about the Philippines anymore and has focused more for China and India. When they announced the Redmi 3, I got very excited initially. Then I realized the Xiaomi Philippines Facebook page doesn't even update anymore. The last good device they released here was the Mi4i last year. And when they do have it here through online sites, there is like a 40% markup price. Only the Chinese get the best prices.
Xiaomi is ignoring alot of countries, so maybe it is better if the excited consumer like me should start ignoring them. Look at the companies that cater to your country in both retail and service centers. Even Motorola and HTC have very little presence here. My mind is shifting towards Samsung, LG, and Huawei these days because I know Xiaomi can announce a new device and it likely won't be available where I live.

It was cool watching a young company like Xiaomi rise in 2014. But now the flash sales and limited availability in countries other than China is starting to rear its ugly head on impatient people. Even if the Mi 5 gets released in my country, I will get an eventual markup price for a device that is probably over half a year too old by the time it is available here. The Mi 4i with its slower Snapdragon 615 was not a compelling upgrade in 2015 over the Mi 3 Snapdragon 800 AB.
The Chinese OEM to watch for the future is Huawei. They are capable of toppling both Apple and Samsung within five years in the mobile industry and already have an answer to Xiaomi with their Honor branding. Their designs are also excellent. I want the Redmi 3 more, but I guess some people have to settle for the Honor 5X at $199 because of its availability.

Can't see how they could retain the price points with the extra distribution costs, marketing and IP taxes.
Maybe for the first device or two they'll swallow the hit but medium-term I'd expect a notable price increase. Plus, after missing Chinese sales forecasts last year, their local cash cow can't fund Western expansion as much as they'd like.

Looks like a really nice handset, that becomes an irrelevant purchase for many of us due to its regionality.
When they finally have european firmwares (drop all areas where Chinese text still creeps in) and make available globally then Xiaomi have a really good chance and shifting a lot of phones here.

It is time for this phone to shine, consider other top names overpriced. To an average Joe, a phone can be used for voice, data, take pictures and text, that will be it. For the manufacturer they consider making a phone say at cost basis at $200 and sell at twice the price will be enough, unlike those big names wanted over $600. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure who will sell more phones in the long run.
As for cloning concern, they are advertising Qualcom and Sharp as the processor and display suppliers. Law suits will linger in the court for ages, by the end of it, we have enjoyed our phones, who cares ?
Cloning concerns are very real concerns for Xiaomi outside those few countries it can copy without retribution. But try and come into N America, Europe and other places were IP is actually enforced and watch Xiaomi's product get stuck in customs for an indefinite period of time. Meanwhile, Xiaomi swallows the financial hit.
You think Hugo Barra is stupid? Hell no. And that's why this statement regarding the Mi5 was made and why it will only sell in a very, very few countries.

I actually prefer the Redmi 3 over Mi 5 because of the 4000 mAh and smaller size. I only need 720p at best anyway. But the Mi 5 is one of the best 2016 flagships nobody in the Western Hemisphere can actually buy. Terrific value again. Well done, Xiaomi.

I would prefer the Mi 5 Pro because I want the ceramic back and prefer it in sleek black. But knowing how Xiaomi caters outside China, they likely dump the leftover stock on the Philippines and other SEA countries. I can live with the white (less fingerprint magnet) and slower 1.8 GHz which might save battery life with its 3K mAh. For under $250, the basic version of the Mi 5 is still worth the value carrying a Snapdragon 820. This tops any Nexus device, Huawei Honor 5X, and any ASUS Zenfone in value.

Talking about cloning, Apple sued Samsung in UK, so who won ? Apple has to put up on its ad saying Samsung did not clone Apple. That was the verdict by British court.
let us say xiaomi phones will not be selling in US, come to think of it, is not the end of the world, there are still millions of starving and war suffering people, only the first world corporate greed that fight others in courts and the crooked lawyers are getting rich. Time will only tell if xiaomi will be selling in US and other developed countries.
Actually, you really need to get one. At least redmi 3. Just to try it out. Xiaomi.eu has EU software for xiaomi phones. honorybuy, xiaomiforsale, etc. -> EU warehouse, so you pay no additional costs. Of course, prices are higher then in China, but hey, if you haven't tried xiaomi phone before, believe me, it's really worth it. Flashing roms and rooting is done by an app that comes preinstalled on xiaomi phone, so it's only few touches away. Updates are even more regular then on any other android phone. Xiaomi puts out more updates then Apple come to think about it
I had Mi5 today. But just for today. Brother bought it for himself, i got to play with it until he took it away
I hate white phones, but this one looks excellent. But waiting for black version to come in EU webshops, then buying one for sure. Phone feels great in the hand, much better then S7 or iPhone 6s. I only got the chance to take daily photos, and they were great.
Software is where xiaomi shines. Even redmi 3 is smoother then S7, and this beast simply blows anything that you put on it. I charged the phone before noon to 100%, and with full brightness played with it until 30mins ago. Installed a lot of apps, lot of browsing, etc. And battery was at 43% when I sended it to my brother. Simply amazing.
Buying one for sure. But waiting for the black glass or ceramic version. Even tough white one looks great, I simply prefer black version on any phone.

About cut/paste method xiaomi uses... They do copy apple on software part. MIUI is very similar to iOS, but with great customization options. If you can imagine it, MIUI can do it
But on hardware part, Xiaomi didn't copy samsung at all. Look at Xiaomi Mi Note Pro. That device came out before S6 did. If xiaomi did copy samsung, its just on home button, but then good old sammy copied them on all other design fronts
