XP OEM - installer?

Am thinking of putting XP Pro on a Mac to be able to use some existing Access databases. Will probably use Fusion rather than Bootcamp.

Was looking at buying XP Pro and saw the OEM version on several sites. The MS licence says:

“System builder” means an original equipment manufacturer, or an assembler, reassembler, or installer of software on computer systems."

If I am the installer of the software on the computer system, then is it okay for me to buy and use an OEM version? Simple as that?

Reading more about this on the net. Anyone ever had insurmountable problems using XP Pro OEM version on a Mac (especially with Fusion)? Anyone ever get questioned about it?

I bought my copy of XP Pro (OEM) from Amazon.co.uk — with a free upgrade to Vista.

It installed perfectly under Bootcamp — and I set up Parallels to use my Bootcamp partition.
Only problem was having to re-authorise when I added some extra RAM etc.

So to answer your question — it works perfectly.

Have looked at Amazon UK and they can ship it via 3rd party sellers - guess that's okay - or I'll try dabs or insight.

Installed with no problems on bootcamp. I have just added VMware Fusion. I had to reauthorise (Windows sees the virtual machine as a new computer) but that just involved a few minutes on the phone to an automated system and all is now fine.

If you're not planning on anything too demanding (e.g. games or editing movies) then Fusion is more than adequate for your needs.

Thanks for the advice. I can only find it on Amazon from resellers, rather than from Amazon direct. Don't really know who the resellers are, so for peace of mind I might just go for dabs or insight as recognised companies. No games or movie editing - just need to work with some Access databases. Could just use Bootcamp, but not sure I'll have the patience to switch between OSes - would rather use Fusion as a virtual machine. Maybe I'll do what you did and use both bootcamp and Fusion. When you had to reauthorise, did you just say you've changed the hard-drive or something? Or do you have to explain about running on an Apple?

I have had to do a re-authorise 3 times... not once have I spoken to a single human being. Just need a phone with a keypad.

Just don't forget that YOU become the OEM and are thus responsible for primary support. Several other responsibilities are implied by the SBL when you redistribute the installed license. So, personally, I'd remove OEM Windows from any Mac before I sold it. Let the next owner figure out their own Boot Camp install. A retail license would be a different story.

Cheers - no intention to sell on at any point ... and happy to provide support. Any machine would only be used by me/or a colleague and I'd provide support with whatever is needed.
