XP problem, need geek help

So I've been running XP and a couple weeks ago I noticed my machine started to act strange.

When rebooted and everything is loaded, I've noticed something was hogging up all my resources, so I run Task Manager and I find that one of the svchost.exes is the problem. So I kill that process and the system goes back to full speed. Of all the svchosts, the one i kill everytime is the one w/ the longest list of threads/processes (it doesn't crash xp).

But I wanted to find out EXACTLY what is wrong, so I pinpointed to what I think is the problem. I think it's Winmgmt.Exe inside that svchost.exe, because when I pause it, the system reverts back to full speed.

Task manager doesn't show svchost.exe to be always eating up 99% of the cpu, while it does do that sometimes. But most times the system is just lagged to death doing anything w/ the hard drive running.

I tried all sorts of AV and spyware removal, but nothing came up.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

There is something you can run that will let you choose which services run, but i cant remember how to get to it. If i find out, i will tell you

Oh man, I think one of my friends had exactly the same issue on his PC a few years ago. Forget what the fix was though. You probably already tried, but maybe google can help?

I ran this program called Prodex or something. It essentially allows you to see into a particular process's threads. Pretty much a deeper version of Task Manager.

Sometimes this problem doesn't occur and that adds to the frustration because of its inconsistency.

I'm still trying different things to exactly pinpoint the problem.

Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs).

This KB document should help you: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056. It describes how to view the list of services that are running in Svchost, so you can determine the problematic one(s).

15 seconds of Googling really pays off.

I've only really come across this situation with broken AV updates and one case of a conflict with AV software (again) and other security-related apps. Maybe it's worth changing to a different AV, making sure you've totally removed the current one.

But then I don't run Parallels nor Boot Camp on any real basis, so it could be a more Mac specific issue.

On Windows 2003 you type "tlist /s" to get a list of all running tasks including which ones are running inside svchost.exe. I don't have much deal with XP though, so can't tell you whether it carries over or not.
