Some time ago I purchased XP Home Upgrade for an older PC. Now I would like to use that same disk to put XP on my new MacBook Pro, will that work? Thanks

The upgrade only works if you have a previous version of Windows installed on your laptop.

The installation media is exactly the same as with the full version of Windows XP. The difference, I believe, is with the EULA. It's illegal to install an upgrade version without owning a full previous version. That said, it is my understanding that if you do own another full version of Windows that's not tied to your PC, then you may install the upgrade version on your MacBook Pro without penalty.

Well crap! Just found out that the XP Home 'SP3' for System Builders disc I ordered from Newegg wont work with Bootcamp, you must use the 'SP2' version. Newegg doesn't even carry the SP2 version anymore. Looks like I'll have to search the web.

You must use SP2 or HIGHER. It will work, I recently installed with a SP3 disk with no issues. I believe it says you must use SP2 still because it was originally released before SP3 came out, meaning it will not work with SP1. In any case anything SP2 + will work fine.

Hi Markov. I got the info about no SP3 from this...

http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/windows-classic-linux-other-os/135758-xp-sp3-problem-install.html

For Christmas I got a new MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8GHz 1066MHz frontside bus with 6MB L2 Cache, 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 memory, 320GB Hard Drive and Leopard 10.5.6.

Are you saying you have indeed installed XP SP3 thru Bootcamp 2.1 without any problems?

Most will answer the SP3 question with 'No', but dont believe them.

I have a new MacBook Pro running 10.5.6. Searching the net I found several documents showing that a Full version of Windows XP version SP3 will install just fine.

Older documentation called out for 'SP2 only'. Later documentation called out for 'SP2 or Later'. Now you will read 'Windows XP version SP2 or SP3'.

Also adding to the confusion is the difference between 'Updating' to SP3 as opposed to 'Installing' XP version SP3. To 'Update' to SP3 requires a current install of XP SP2 and a download of the Bootcamp 2.1 Update. A fresh install of Windows XP version SP3 requires the Bootcamp 2.1 update 'after' XP is installed.

I just installed Windows XP version SP3 without any problems at all. I used the System Builders disc from Newegg.

Used Boot Camp Assistant to partition, inserted the XP disc, it automatically installed perfectly, ejected it (as I had read, I had to eject it by holding down the touchpad and re-starting, it booted right back into XP and ejected the XP disc, no problem), inserted the OSX Installation disc, it automatically brought up the Boot Camp program, followed the promps and it installed without a problem, it re-booted back into XP, downloaded the Boot Camp 2.1 Update and installed it without a hitch. Ejected the OSX disc. Went to Windows Update and installed all the latest Updates, Securities and Service Packs that it had, a total of 45 through both 'Express' and 'Custom' over several required re-starts and returns to Windows Update.

I now have a fully updated Windows XP version SP3 running smoother and faster than it did on my old PC!

Now to install Nod32 then O&O Defrag 11 and run it through it's paces then I'm done and happy!
