Just dropping in to say hello. I am a long time Windows fanboy who is making the jump to Mac. After watching some videos of the OS in operation I decided to make the leap and bought an iMac 2.66GHz today.

Many of my work friends have made the move and they are happy so I thought I would check it out for myself. Hopefully the learning curve won't be too painful and I can make my way around alright.

So... Hello Mac peoples!

Welcome! :)

You'll find a lot of people here who have also made the switch and others (such as myself) who - at least for work purposes - still use both, so feel free to shout for help if you get stuck!

So... Hello Mac peoples!

If you just know Windows so far, a UNIX based Operating System like MacOS will feel strange, all these different concepts that there are, no drive letter, just directories etc., programs are not installed just dropped in the program folder (which is right out ingenious, since I spend lots of time cleaning the registry on my Windows PC). The Dock is odd in the beginning but after I while you will find things quite logical and accessible.

And for me the biggest thing is that OSX (also Linux) has not the same life cycle as Windows, where, from day one, you feel the system gets slower and slower due to programs that put stuff god knows where in the system, dead entries in the registry and more and more background programs that just want to run all the time...and you have to get special programs to clean the system. Not to mention the performace which goes to virus and worm scanning...and there is no MSN Messenger which has to be deleted with a special ereaser tool just to make sure its dead dead dead...eventually it will sneak in with the next office installation.

You will feel the "wanna go home to mum" feeling when you install BootCamp Windows for the first time since you know your way around, but that will fade, believe me...the fonts, the clean window style, the little animations when switching spaces, expose etc.

Gotta chime in and say 'Welcome!' as well.
I've recently started using the forums a lot more,
and trust me, it's helpful/convenient place to be,
and I'm sure with your recent conversion that you'll find a lot of good information here.

...and the people are nice too. :)

you must be one hell of a power user do that with your windows boxes...

the biggest tip i can offer is try not to translate things from windows to mac. don't think "okay, this is how it's done in XP, so i'm going to try and find out what the closest way to do that would be." just do what actually makes sense and start from the ground up! that sounds confusing...hmm.

also, i remember looking for the "start" bar when trying to open an app or file and being like "woah...it's not there" feeling very confined.

after a couple weeks you'll be flying through your mac loving how easy it is to use.

I am reading up on everything I can right now and I am sure there will be some growing pains. But overall it looks like it will be a pretty smooth move. I mean, it runs MS office so that isn't a big deal. And my gaming on computers is limited to WoW. The rest is on the 360. The machine should be here Wednesday. I will post back then.

I got the iMac in last night and got WoW installed and did a little surfing and exploring of the OS. So my first impression...

WOW! I even found myself saying, "Wow, this just works!" Right out of the box. Just plug it in and get the updates. And everything just works.

I likey! I have to say, i have done a lot of Mac bashing over the years. But this OS rocks. The style and functionality are amazing. It's not just a great looking box but it performs beautifully. I am converted :)
