As title says. Getting a 12 for my son and went through the process of pre-approval and was amazed to find his XR would fetch 250 in trade in.

Is it too good to be true?

Given you can get at least $400 by selling privately or through Swappa, is $250 really "too good to be true"?

I haven't used Swappa, but is there a way they help you to avoid this scam scenario?
  • Some anonymous person online buy's your phone on Swappa via PayPal.
  • You send the phone to them via FedEx (hell, even with signature confirmation to be safe).
  • They put in a claim with PayPal saying the box they signed for didn't have what they purchased.
  • PayPal refunds the buyer the money and the buyer then sends you back a box with the phone missing.
Don't get me wrong I think the majority of people are good and so a situation like this would be rare, but I've just read too many stories on eBay of people having a nefarious buyer and PayPal almost always siding with the buyer by refunding their money to them (even though they now have the phone). I don't like the offers that Apple gives, but I can understand if people are worried about being ripped off via PayPal scams that they would take it since they don't have to think about anything.

Thats why so far I've stuck with Craigslist (cash $ only) and selling in person at very public locations, say inside an Apple Store, where I don't fear being robbed.

You can verify it here as well but it must be in a good condition

thabks. I saw that and was just surprised. And phone is in good condition

Your better keeping it.
I was offered £500 UK pounds for my iPhone 11 Pro 256gb perfect condition decided to keep this as a backup phone trade in prices this year a joke.

Swappa handles the financial transaction and has measures in place to minimize the chance of scammers. It’s much safer than eBay or just using PayPal.

This is why I stopped trying to sell everything myself. I'll take Apple's guaranteed money over dealing with avoiding scammers, etc. My time is more valuable.

Such as... ?

Looking on Swappa’s on website it seems like PayPal is the transaction company:

Also if you by “measures” you mean Swappa simply checks the IMEI of phones listed for sale to make sure it isn’t stolen before it is sold... that simply protects the BUYER and doesn’t fix the PayPal buyer scam scenario which steals from the SELLER that I gave above.

Craigslist : $350 + risk of COVID-19 virus + risk of robbery
eBay : $350 - 10% ebay fee - 3% paypal fee - 6~10% tax + risk of false claim
AT&T trade-in : $200
T-Mobile trade-in : $196
Apple trade-in : $250

Way to go with the numbers.

I would rather take the apple trade in. Apple is only giving $210 for my 8+, I might just take that.

Any one know other reliable sites that will buy iPhones? (US based)

Apple is offering $250 for my unlocked XR 128GB in good condition, but some 3rd party sites are offing more. Fore example: uptradeit.com is offering $325.

Anyone have any 1st hand experience with uptradeit.com or other places to sell iPhones?

What I see for the T-Mobile trade-in offer is $415.

Try facebook market. At least you can check their fb profile to see if they're real.

Best Buy offers $300 gift card if you shop there a lot.

I sold my 11 pro max for 900 using Facebook marketplace. I wore a mask, he wore a mask, and no handshakes. We met inside the lobby of a police station. So that addresses your COVID and robbery risks

I’ve used itsworthmore.com the last three iPhones I had and never had a problem. Though it’s not the highest return for the value of the phone, it was safe for me

Carrier offers a better deal yes, but you are in it for the long haul - 30 months EIP.

Apple is OK for trade ins.

I sold my 11 64gb on OfferUp for $500 cash which I used against the $1100 12 Pro....
Don't like having the phone financed - prefer to own it outright...

I took the Best Buy $300 offer. My time is worth money so that factors in.
That’s what I usually do for my iPads and I may do that for my iPhone 11 if I decide to upgrade since they’re offering $430.
