For anybody with a plus phone and wondering about the size and screen differences, here is what I found from my visit to the Apple store to compare the XR and Max to my 6S+
What I want from a new phone: 1. Big screen for Safari and watching movies/TV shows. 2. dependable data for tethering. 3. great cameras.
So that would mean a Max, right? Well yeah, if only Apple can fix the LTE/Wifi problems...
The following is all from the view of a fan of the plus sized phone.
The Max
Looks awesome, screen is magnificent. Feels incredible in hand, didn't feel too heavy at all or too big. If you like a plus phone then there is nothing bad about this phone. It's definitely not too big at all. Except for the LARGE problem of LTE and Wifi not working well for many many people ATM. Video looked better on this than on the XR and 6S+. But in the general screens, it wasn't really obvious apart from the colours popping on the Max and somewhat on the XR in comparison to the Plus.
The XR (screen is 3.5mm narrower than a plus phone)
Impressed by the screen in comparison to my 6S+. I put 2 different movies on via Youtube and both looked better on the XR than on my 6S+. One movie trailer was Aquaman (looks stupid, but had lots of colors in it). This movie showed slightly larger than the 6S+ as the aspect ratio took advantage of the longer screen. I then loaded up the original trailer for Gremlins. Once again it looked better on the XR, but was definitely smaller due to the aspect ratio. It wasn't a massive size decrease but it was enough to notice it.
Now, neither of these were 1080p I'm assuming, so I'd say that 1080p should def look better on the plus phone (yeah???). I did compare Max to XR, but the Max definitely looked better when viewing the installed movie trailers in the video player app (Jumanji/Greatest Showman). And the size of the Max videos! Wow! Looks like a mini cinema for new movies!
The overall colors in the videos on the XR were really impressive and looked better than the colors on my Plus (could have been settings). I was really impressed by the XR though. It seemed totally fine screen wise and very comfortable in hand. It actually felt small and lighter than the Plus. Which apparently it isn't lighter.
The amount of text displayed in safari on the XR is more than a plus, but smaller font size. If you turn on zoomed view it will show the identical amount of text in a slightly larger font.
I didn't notice the bezels at all as a plus user. I do prefer the slightly wider screen though I must admit. I wish Apple has made the phone a few mm wider and a few mm shorter.
As for colors. So far all my iphones have been space grey or black. And it would stay that way. Black is the only colour for blokes that don't want to look flashy or need to use it for business. White was disappointing IMO. Black in Max as well.
I could absolutely live with the XR coming from the 6S+. But the Max is such a monster of a phone in every way (except night time portrait mode) and that is the phone I want to buy but I will wait and see if Apple fixes the problems with it first. And if they don't, I'll be happy to get an XR for a year or so.
Hope this helps with anybody wondering about the screen and sizing in relation to the 6/6S+.
