Other XS camera is disappointing

Just used the camera on the XS for the first time and am disappointed in the picture quality. Maybe worse than the X indoors. My daughter was just a jr cheerleader clinic and I took some pics inside a fairly bright gym and the pics were very grainy. I saw someone else mention the phot quality earlier but yikes, Apple this is a letdown.

The camera is one of the reason ps I bought the MAX. Your camera should be doing better.

These were zoomed in a bit. No zoom, pics are fine.

All depends on how much you zoomed. Any image from a phone will “break down” a bit when you peep at the pixels.

Anything after pressing “2x” is digital zoom, you’re best getting closer to the subject or not zooming at all

I don't know if it's a file size thing (Apple's high efficiency settings) or if Apple actually thinks the smoothing looks better. But anyway, your pictures will never look great zoomed in on an iPhone.

These are very low res and reduced file sizes. I can post up on a cloud drive the full size if anyone really must have. I have many many more examples for iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone X

Best to not zoom or zoom 2x only, and take a picture, then crop it afterwards. You get the best quality then.

Except it is true. All your zoomed in examples have the oil painting effect to some degree. The lower the light, the fuzzier it looks.

Show me, post up, other cellphone cams that are noticeable better post up some here.

Hard to know without being there. I’ve had trouble in the past photographing my kids’ sports events in a gymnasium with my DSLR. It seems well lit to the eye but it is darker than the daylight outside. You have the added problem that because everyone is in motion you want to use a relatively fast shutter. If you are close enough you can use the flash. If it is a static scene you can use Cortex Cam to average a bunch of pictures to reduce noise.

If you didn’t use optical zoom on these you may have a bad Apple.
