So I'm trying to go caseless for the first time with my XS Max (having AC+ really helps with the fear of that). But, I'm struggling on how to set down my phone on a desk or table. Do you go face down or back side down?

Usually back side down, and I have a microfiber cloth in my pocket for my glasses and to clean the iPhone screen, so I usually put the device on the cloth.

I usually rest it on a microfiber cloth if I were to go caseless. I would never place it down on a hard surface.

I went caseless from the original iphone all the way up until the X. When I started using the apple leather case with the X, I never realized how liberating it is to not worry about what surface i can place it on.
When I didn't have a case I always had to be mindful of where I put it, if there's anything underneath the phone that could scratch the glass, to always gently place it down, to hold the phone so it won't slide around while driving, etc.
Needless to say, it was pretty stressful.

I have Applecare+ on my X currently but still opted to use a case. Going naked feels great but the case really does help with grip.

Backside down if it’s a surface that will do no harm. If that’s the case though I’ll keep it in the pocket.

This. Had an X. One day picked up the electric blue apple leather case and it was liberating. Just throw my phone down with no worries. Same with my Max. Whit silicone case. Nekkid is nice but got tired of being careful. Also nice to have extra grip.

I’m sure I’ll switch back to nothing at some point again.

I know it's still not QUITE the same, but look into the Peel or Totallee cases for iPhone. Super thin and it's about the closest thing to caseless that you can get without having to worry about scratches.

They're not all that protective but if the alternative is going caseless, it's better than nothing.

if i had to do caseless i rather set it on the back. at least u can still see your screen stuff without having to do the flippy flip

I use a soft slip case from Waterfield so I set the phone onto it. Perfect.

I have one rule: I never lay my phone facedown on a hard surface, and I always lay my phone with something soft underneath it. I don’t use cases very often, but that’s just something How I always have treated my smart phones.

Yea I can't do it. I don't like putting it down on hard surfaces without a case. I would suggest buying the Caudabe Veil XT. Very very minimal bulk (if any) and protects it for just that, placing on surfaces. Feels nice too, grippy and matte surface.

I would only ever go naked with AC+ which I really should have bought. I still have time but £199 isn't an insignificant amount of money.

Screen up. I don't set mine down on hard surfaces. I either put it back in my pocket or on something soft such as napkins, paper, a book, magazine, towel, something other than hard surfaces. Was setting up the wifes phone yesterday, she plopped it down onto our quartz countertops...i was like wtf lol..but she uses a case(just didn't have one on yet).

One time with my caseless iphone 5 I handed it to my FIL to look at a picture. He sat it down on the counter and SLID it back to me..Wasn't happy lol..

I do the same: it's pretty easy to find something soft. I showed a groupon at checkout at a restaurant with my caseless 5s, and the cashier grabbed it to get a better look before I could react, and he slapped it down on the glass counter surface. I wasn't happy, either.

Just chuck it down however really. Usually, with the back on the surface, I put it on rather than the front.

Yeah thats the worst thing about having a caseless phone is letting someone else handle it.

I would be extremely paranoid if I encounter a situation where I'm at a store and need assistant, and the employee who works there asks to take my phone so he can check something in the back. I'm not sure what to do at that point. Saying no would sound funny, especially when they are trying to assist me. I don't know what else I would do.

I have a slim flat wallet in soft leather that I always place under my phone when putting it on a table.

Camera side down—always and ever since iOS made it possible to only show content of notifications after unlocking with Face ID.

Tried it. Felt kind of like when driving around with nice leather seats in a luxury car that has the plastic protection on the seats. Really silly and the quality is poor—really poor.

I always place my Xs camera side down. I have a skin on the back of my device, plus AC+. I did the same with my X and never scratched the camera.

I put it back-down on any surface, I really do not think about it that much.
No wonders, my glass back is badly scratched! But as long as the screen does not have any visually impairing scratches, I'm ok with it.
