So I'm trying to go caseless for the first time with my XS Max (having AC+ really helps with the fear of that). But, I'm struggling on how to set down my phone on a desk or table. Do you go face down or back side down?
I went caseless from the original iphone all the way up until the X. When I started using the apple leather case with the X, I never realized how liberating it is to not worry about what surface i can place it on.
When I didn't have a case I always had to be mindful of where I put it, if there's anything underneath the phone that could scratch the glass, to always gently place it down, to hold the phone so it won't slide around while driving, etc.
Needless to say, it was pretty stressful.
I have Applecare+ on my X currently but still opted to use a case. Going naked feels great but the case really does help with grip.

Screen up. I don't set mine down on hard surfaces. I either put it back in my pocket or on something soft such as napkins, paper, a book, magazine, towel, something other than hard surfaces. Was setting up the wifes phone yesterday, she plopped it down onto our quartz countertops...i was like wtf lol..but she uses a case(just didn't have one on yet).
One time with my caseless iphone 5 I handed it to my FIL to look at a picture. He sat it down on the counter and SLID it back to me..Wasn't happy lol..
I do the same: it's pretty easy to find something soft. I showed a groupon at checkout at a restaurant with my caseless 5s, and the cashier grabbed it to get a better look before I could react, and he slapped it down on the glass counter surface. I wasn't happy, either.
I have a slim flat wallet in soft leather that I always place under my phone when putting it on a table. So I'm trying to go caseless for the first time with my XS Max (having AC+ really helps with the fear of that). Tried it. Felt kind of like when driving around with nice leather seats in a luxury car that has the plastic protection on the seats. Really silly and the quality is poor—really poor.I know it's still not QUITE the same, but look into the Peel or Totallee cases for iPhone. Super thin and it's about the closest thing to caseless that you can get without having to worry about scratches.
They're not all that protective but if the alternative is going caseless, it's better than nothing.
