Down south
I was looking at a few of the reviews, and one of them really got me thinking - so I can use my 8+ one-handed most of the time. My Loopy case allows me to really reach to my top left corner with my thumb and click something there.

I did not, however, really think about the fact that with the screen filling the entire XS Max face, and needing to swipe down from the top all the time, that I now probably will NOT be able to do that with my one hand.

I guess I’m a bit worried now that the Max may actually be too big for me to use one-handed. I realize I probably just need to wait and see, but I’m just trying to think it through as I have pre-ordered my case and other things, and IDK if I should hold off til my phone comes or what.

Also, what are the odds I’ll be able to swap the Max for an XS if I DO find it to be too big to use?

Stop and consider if that’s a deal breaker for you. I rarely even use my X with one hand, only when reading a forum and swiping the page up with my thumb, I’m on a call or it’s on my desk. Otherwise, I hold it with one hand and control with the other. It feels more secure in my hands that way and easier to control. I’m expecting to use the Max with 2 hands, but then that’s how I use my X already.

Do a search... someone posted this very argument last year, on macrumors.

Learn to use reachability, or cancel/return the iphkne max. Afterall thats what the point if the article was.

Go to a store and try the X after reading user experiences, with the various hacks for this.

The X has the same 'issue'. So the Max will just be more of it. If you can't really tell from the limited time in a store, do a trial run with your shipment. (at least you get a new toy for while ;) )

Just use the Reachability feature, you’ll be fine. I’ve used that on my 6 Plus a lot, it’s very helpful.

I wish they would change how you activate reachability on the new designs. Its awkward for me to reach down with my thumb and then swipe down. Double tapping at bottom of screen maybe?

Just go and see the phone in person, you can't tell if you're going to like it or not bu not having it in your hands.

I wouldn't worry too much about it though I get what you're concerned about. Remember though that this is a software feature. They can change it any time once their own engineers get their hands on it and can use it everyday out in the wild. Perhaps they'll agree it's not easy and figure something else out.

Yeah I guess it’ll take a bit getting used to. I would love to see different options to activate it too.

I mean its pretty easy to test. If you can’t reach from the bottom of phone to the very top of the 8+ now then you won’t be able to swipe on a xs max easily either. If you have an 8inch handspan or greater you should be able to reach the far corner of the phone without to much issue. Any less and it’s probably a stretch.

I owned 1 "plus" size iPhone (6 plus) and I refuse to get another. WAY too big to fit in my pocket and way too hard to use with 1 hand. Using the X for almost a year now and IMO it is the perfect size for me. Everyone is different and that is the beauty of having options, to each their own.

After I posted this, I did try with my 8+ to see if I could reach up into the left corner and I definitely cannot. However, with my Loopy case (which does allow a lot more reach while keeping the phone stable), I think I WOULD be able to swipe down from the top one-handed.

Obviously I know I can return it if it is a problem - I just don’t want to wind up being without a phone if I can’t get an XS at that time.

FWIW, I’m small - 5’3 - and I don’t have big hands at all, but I have not found using the + phones to be an issue for me. The only time I use two hands is when I’m texting, which I would do no matter what size phone I owned. And honestly, that’s only when I’m NOT talking to text, which I do a lot of the time.

Trying to do that on my 7plus seems like it’s gonna SUUUUCK but I’m holding onto my X this year anyways

I’m getting priced out / deincentivized quick

There should be plenty of Xs models available should you go that route.
