I have a new Lexus with an absolute horror show of a GPS system and no CarPlay. First world problem.

Anyhow, I’m ready to upgrade my 7 for a X and want to make the best choice for dash mounting. Glare is always an issue in a car as are fingerprints. Is there a reason that an LCD behaves differently than an OLED?

Thx

IMO any screen will get washed out in direct sunlight. Glare will be due to the sun hitting the glass screen on either phone and both will show fingerprints. So to answer your question, I don’t think it makes a difference getting LCD vs OLED for the reason you’re asking.

You could say the same things about TVs but there is a world of difference in the relative performance of LCD and plasma.

It is mostly the finish of the glass that determines the glare, and I think that will be equal between the two. You could argue that glare will be more noticeable on dark/black areas, which means more noticeable on OLED.

On a separate note, you might like the larger screen size of the XR for navigation. The resolution difference should not be an issue for maps, it will look sharp on both displays.

XR has a larger screen and it's farther away from you in the car (and the car is jiggling around while it's moving) that the XR display's slightly lower resolution is meaningless. Also LCDs can look sharper and don't burn in and can last longer (and don't flicker) so the XR will likely be a better choice for a car. Wait until you can check out a XR in a store in October.

I saw them today but I can’t reach Q with my thumb so the Max is a non starter. It doesn’t matter if it is best for maps. The XS is lovely but I’ll have to wait to see the XR.

OLED iPhones generally don't burn-in, but yeah, if you leave it on all the time in bright mode during the day with Maps running, you definitely run the risk of burn-in.

Basically, the number one option here is the Xr. Or maybe a 7 Plus actually if you want to save money.

BTW, to Toyota/Lexus:

Unless my car gets totalled in an accident or something, I'm not buying another car until it gets CarPlay. Your built-in navigation software sucks, and there's no way I'm paying CAD$200 every year just to get map updates.

Yeah, I wouldn’t have thought a 50 thousand dollar car could have 50 cent electronics.

I bought and returned a 7+. Way too big. XR probably will be too.

Xr is a happy medium. It's bigger than the X, and smaller than the Max, but shows the same amount of data as the Max.

And it's got the exact same pixel density as the 7, so if you're happy with the screen of the 7, you'll be happy with the screen of the Xr. It should also be noted that font sizes on the Xr are the same as the 7. (The screen elements and the fonts sizes on the X and Max are larger.)

i have used samsung note 8 and XR at different times, but i wont say the difference is significant. there are still times when you cant see well on XR. maybe use a cardboard to make something like that below will be a better bet.
