Hey All,

I'm kind of at wits end, I've bought a 2006 XServe for a spell. (50$). However it came with no hard drives. I'm trying real hard to load an OS on it however all i get is a blinking folder indicating no volume to load. Any thoughts?

Things i've tried:

Fedora on a USB Drive.
OSX 10.7 Install On a USB Drive.
OSX 10.7 Install flashed to a hard drive.

I mean I hold down alt/option on load and nothing even comes up or happens. Just goes to blinking folder.

What keyboard are you using? Windows Keyboard? or is it the flat Keyboard from apple. At work when I test apple computers the flat keyboard from apple sometimes wont work with ALT/OPTION but then I try an older apple keyboard it will work. Perhaps this helps good luck.

Xserve 1,1 is a PowerPC machine with a 32-bit processor; you'll need to download an older version of Fedora (<17) and OSX 10.7 definitely will not run on it.

In anycase, the machine is so slow and so old, it's not worth the power to run it.

XServe1,1 isn't PPC, it's Intel Xeon and fairly decent performance.

I would probably use an external USB DVD drive and install from a Mac OS 10.7 or 10.8 image burned to DVD. Another option would be in target mode over Firewire from a laptop / desktop.

It may not be the latest / fastest but would still make a good web / cache / proxy / experimental server. And they look cool :)
